In a sea of high-rise leggings, midrise options can be difficult to come by, but this near-perfect pair is one of the most comfortable on the list. “Although I’d never heard of this brand before a cursory Amazon search ahead of an Iceland trip, they’re now my go-to winter pair,” says Glamour contributor Brie Schwartz. “The water-resistant fleece-lined leggings kept me dry and warm on a glacier hike and a very long Turkey Trot on a seemingly arctic day in Buffalo, and yet they’re thin enough for layering under stretchy jeans. The best part? In an era of high-waist everything, these come in a comfy mid-rise that sits at the hip.”

Pros: Durable; comfortable waistband
Cons: Color loses its luster after a year

Sizes: XXS–XL / Material: 87% polyester, 13% elastane / Colors: 3 options

CRZ Yoga Thermal Fleece Lined Leggings

“I’m someone who runs cold, so fleece-lined tights are kind of a non-negotiable when it comes to casual dressing in the wintertime,” says Glamour commerce writer Alanna Martine Kilkeary. She likes that this best-selling pair is ultra-warm, goes with just about anything, and is very durable. “I’ve worn these leggings under my ski suit without any stretches or tears, on weekends running errands, and even on work-from-home days when I want to be extra comfy. I’ve probably put them in the wash about 25 times since I got them a few months ago, and there hasn’t been a pill in sight. They don’t slip down in the slightest, and they hug my waist really comfortably. I’ve worn these in 20-degree weather in New York City and on a nearly 10-degree day while atop a green—they’ve kept me super-warm every single time!”

Pros: Versatile; cozy; good value for money
Cons: Some sizing inconsistencies

Sizes: XXS–XL / Material: 87% polyamide, 13% spandex / Colors: 16 options

Lululemon Fast and Free High-Rise Thermal Tights

Water-resistant and toasty? Sign all winter athletes up for these ultra-warm workout tights, which have a brushed interior to keep goosebumps at bay and no inseam to cut down on chafing during intense exercise. “I know these are expensive, but IMO, Lululemon leggings are worth the price since they last for years and countless washes,” says Glamour reviewer Francesca Simmons. “They’re perfect for taller people like me—I’m standing at five-feet-ten—and they don’t roll down or shift whether I’m on a brisk walk or a jog.” For tall people, the 28-inch length is best—but these leggings also come in a 25-inch option for shorter folks.

Pros: Compressive design; no inseam for comfy wear
Cons: Some sizes sell out quickly

Sizes: 0–14 / Materials: 87% recycled polyester, 13% Lycra / Colors: 5 options

Crafted from sweat-wicking merino wool, these leggings offer exceptional insulation while managing moisture, making them perfect for both outdoor adventures and nights in. “I love how soft the brushed interior feels against the skin,” says Glamour contributor Kristine Thomason. “The ergonomic design also allows for plenty of movement, so I never felt restricted, whether I was hitting the trails or watching TV on the couch. Plus, merino wool’s natural odor-resistance means you can wear them multiple times without worrying about stink.”

Pros: Moisture-wicking, odor-resistant material
Cons: Limited sizing

Sizes: XS–XL / Materials: 47% recycled polyester, 38% merino wool, 15% elastane / Colors: 3 options

Baleaf High-Waisted Fleece-Lined Leggings

“These leggings feel surprisingly current without sacrificing comfort,” says Glamour contributor Brigitt Earley. “The slightly wider leg gives them a modern silhouette that’s a nice break from traditional skinny styles, yet they’re still perfectly suitable for light exercise like walking or stretching.” The high-rise waistband stays put and provides support without rolling down, and the fabric feels soft against the skin while holding up well after multiple washes. “I wore them for a casual morning workout, running errands, and lounging later. I was comfortable both indoors and out, even though temps were in the high 30s,” Earley says. With their cozy, versatile fit, these leggings double as loungewear while still looking polished enough to wear out.

Pros: Tons of colors; slimming waistband; regular, petite, and tall inseams
Cons: Flared style isn’t ideal for intense workouts

Sizes: XS–XXL / Materials: 75% polyester, 25% spandex / Colors: 13 options

Best Squat-Proof: Vuori Chilled Out LeggingsOriginal photo from Brigitt Earley testing Vuori Chilled Out Legging

7/11

Vuori Chilled Out Leggings

“Out of the four fleece-lined leggings I tried, this is the sleekest pair without sacrificing on warmth,” Glamour’s Earley says, noting they’d make a great base layer under sweatpants or joggers. The high-waist design stays in place and doesn’t roll down, while the fabric feels lightweight and soft against the skin but holds its shape through every squat and stretch, so you don’t have to worry about them being see-through. “I went for a three-mile run on a windy, 50-degree day and stayed perfectly comfortable the whole time. Beyond workouts, these high-waisted fleece-lined leggings are versatile enough for athleisure vibes. I love pairing these leggings with an oversized sweatshirt and sporty sneakers for an effortlessly put-together look.”

Pros: Waist doesn’t roll; lightweight yet not transparent; versatile look
Cons: May not be as warm as some thicker leggings

Sizes: XXS–XXL / Materials: Recycled polyester, elastane / Colors: 4 options

Best Sheer Leggings: UISLII Fleece Lined Tights WomenOriginal photo from Kristine Thomason testing UISLII Fleece Lined Tights

8/11

Uislii Fleece-Lined Tights

These high-rise fleece tights feel like leggings, but magically look like you’re wearing sheer tights. “The first time I tried these fleece-lined leggings, I was immediately impressed by just how soft, cozy, and warm they felt—yet it somehow looked like I was wearing transparent tights,” Thomason says. That’s all thanks to a cozy skin-toned layer that sits beneath a sheer exterior fabric, which creates the illusion of much thinner tights. “I love to pair these with dresses and skirts because they sit nicely without looking or feeling too bulky. My only note is that this particular pair is best-suited for people with longer torsos—I have a short torso and found they reached over my ribcage unless I scrunched them down a tad. But otherwise, if you want to wear a cozy layer under your dresses or skirts without looking like you’re rocking a full-blown pair of leggings, then I can’t recommend these tights enough.”

Pros: Soft material; sheer appearance
Cons: Not ideal for short torsos; might be too light for darker skin tones

Sizes: M–XL / Materials: 73% polyester, 20% spandex, 7% nylon / Colors: 15 options

Best for Work: X-Cheng Fleece-Lined TightsOriginal photo from Kristine Thomason testing X-Cheng Fleece-Lined Tights Sheer Women

9/11

X-Cheng Fleece-Lined Tights

“When I first tried these, I found they were super-easy to slip on, yet immediately offered compressive support all over my legs and torso. Wearing them felt like wrapping my legs in a cozy blanket—and yet, they didn’t feel thick, even when I wore them under a tight wool skirt,” Thomason says. “They hug your stomach in a way that feels comfortable and not too tight. I also love that while they’re thick and fleece-lined, they look like sheer tights thanks to a bottom layer that matches my skin tone. These are the perfect tights to wear under a skirt or dress at work, or even under a pair of jeans or slacks on an especially chilly day. They look chic but feel incredibly cozy—which is ideal for frigid commutes and chilly offices alike.” You can’t beat the price point, either.

Pros: Sheer appearance; extra-soft fleece; 13 color options
Cons: Skin tone may not match everyone

Sizes: XS–3XL / Materials: 35% polyester, 25% spandex, 40% cotton / Colors: 10 options

Best with Zippered Pockets: Athleta Rainier High-Rise LeggingsOriginal photo from Brigitt Earley testing Athleta Rainier High Rise Legging

10/11

Athleta Rainier High-Rise Leggings

“These are great for outdoor exercise,” says Earley, who notes the thicker fabric keeps you nice and toasty on chilly days, and the high-rise design stays in place while you move. The zippered pockets, though small—you won’t fit a phone, but they easily hold keys, a credit card, or some cash—are secure and perfect for carrying essentials on a run or walk, too. On the downside, the zippers and seams give the leggings a slightly utilitarian look, so they’re better suited for exercise than everyday fashion. “I do really appreciate the fact that they come in tall sizes,” she says. “As a 5-feet-7 woman, a lot of full-length leggings don’t actually cover my ankles unless I wear really tall socks, but these are the perfect length.”

Pros: Regular, tall, and petite lengths; inclusive sizing; reflective details
Cons: Style leans utilitarian

Sizes: XXS–3X / Materials: Recycled polyester, elastane / Colors: 12 options

Best for Outdoor Workouts: Janji Aurora Fleece TightsOriginal photo from Kristine Thomason testing Janji Aurora Fleece Tight

11/11

Janji Aurora Fleece Tights

“As an avid runner, I can attest that the Janji Aurora fleece tights are a game-changer for cold-weather workouts,” Thomason says. These high-quality tights are crafted from soft fleece that provides exceptional warmth while remaining lightweight and breathable—perfect for brisk morning runs. “The high waistband offers a secure fit that stays in place, and the thoughtful design includes pockets for storing essentials like gels or your phone. Plus, I love that it features a reflective pattern that enhances visibility, keeping you safe during those low-light runs.”

Pros: Inclusive sizing; reflective pattern; pockets
Cons: Pricey; pockets can be bulky

Sizes: XXS–3XL / Materials: 77% recycled polyester, 23% spandex / Colors: 5 options

How we chose the best leggingsTesting process: Glamour editors and testers tried a wide range of fleece-lined leggings in sub-40 degree chilly conditions, putting them through their paces during everyday activities, running, and light workouts. Each pair of leggings was assessed based on softness, durability (meaning how long they lasted without pilling or thinning), reliability (whether or not they slipped down during workouts), and how effectively they protected against the cold after spending at least 30 minutes outside. We also assessed these leggings in both indoor and outdoor settings to determine the versatility of each pair. For each pair, we tested and washed it at least five times.

Selection criteria: We looked for high-quality fleece linings that provide warmth while remaining breathable, as well as designs that allow for ease of movement. Additionally, we prioritized styles that can easily transition from home to the streets, ensuring versatility in your winter wardrobe. We also took into consideration factors like pocket placement and sizing options to cater to different individuals.

All your fleece-lined legging questions, answeredAre fleece-lined leggings good at keeping you warm?

Yes, fleece-lined leggings are designed to keep you warm by providing insulation. The material traps heat close to your body, making them an excellent choice for chilly weather.

In what temperature do you need fleece-lined leggings?

In theory, you can slip into a pair of fleece-lined leggings whenever you want to feel extra cozy. But for the most part, these leggings are designed to shield your body from the cold when temperatures drop below 40 degrees. When it’s really frigid (we’re talking single digits), fleece-lined leggings can serve as a mid-layer with another layer on top.

Are jeans or fleece leggings warmer?

Generally, fleece-lined leggings are warmer than jeans. The soft fleece lining provides insulation and retains heat, making them more comfortable in chilly temperatures. Jeans can offer some warmth but are typically less effective at trapping heat. Additionally, fleece leggings often have moisture-wicking properties, which can keep you warmer if you’re active outdoors. That said, layering thin thermal leggings underneath jeans can be an effective way to stay warm.
