Lululemon Softstreme High-Rise Pants

Lululemon’s straight-leg sweatpants are made of a uniquely soft, silky, polyester-modal-spandex blend that might make you forget its leggings entirely. “They’re almost satin-like in feel inside,” says Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs. “When I put them on for the first time, the words that came to mind were silky and substantial. These pants aren’t messing around. They’re durable, very fitted with a shock cord (a plus, since tying a drawstring gets tiring), and have multiple pockets, including a hidden sleeve for your credit cards. They’re extremely warm without feeling heavy, and almost too high-rise, accentuating my stomach a tad more than I like. I think they’re ideal for wearing casually during cold weather, paired with an oversized sweater.” Plus, these high-waist sweatpants deliver a trendy silhouette without being too exaggerated or tough to style. (And yes, there’s a matching sweatshirt for full matching-set vibes.)

Pros: Warm, smooth material; high-quality construction; three lengths
Cons: Could be lower-rise

Sizes: 0–20 in short, regular, and tall / Colors: 9 options / Material: 53% recycled polyester, 38% modal, 9% elastane

Vuori Performance Joggers

These joggers were some of the most recommended by our editors because of how ultrasoft and stretchy they are (and how they only grow cozier with each wash, according to Glamour senior editor Stephanie McNeal). “I love sweats but hate that they often weren’t appropriate for the office or meeting up with people for dinner,” says Jessica Radloff, Glamour’s senior West Coast editor. “Enter Vuori, which creates athleisure that’s not only the softest but also incredibly chic and fashion-forward. They’re acceptable to wear to more than just the gym. I can dress them up or down, and I’ve yet to find a more flattering pair. I’ve always been a sweatpants girl, but TBH, I’ve never found a better brand than Vuori.” (Pro tip: The brand name is pronounced “vee-ori.”) Whether you’re in the market for activewear or traveling attire, they’re just right.

Pros: Extra-soft, stretchy material; polished look
Cons: Some pilling after multiple washes

Sizes: XXS–XXL in regular and long / Colors: 13 options / Material: 89% recycled polyester, 11% elastane

Amazon Essentials French Terry Fleece Joggers

You need these Amazon bestsellers on your radar, stat. Available in plenty of different colors (as well as classic gray, earthy brown, and navy blue) these medium-weight sweats have earned praise and high ratings from tens of thousands of reviewers for their laid-back slim fit and supersoft texture. “They’re ultrathin and breathable, so I don’t overheat, and the cuff doesn’t slide up during the night and cut off my circulation, which has happened with every other jogger I’ve tried to sleep in,” says CondĂ© Nast’s Kim Fusaro, who owns a similar pair from Amazon. “But my favorite part is that, while they’re the best for sleeping, they also totally work out of bed—and out of the house, even—so I can answer the door or run to Target and no one knows I’m still in my pajamas. Plus, they have pockets! Everything is better with pockets.” Agreed.

Pros: Size-inclusive; relatively affordable
Cons: Sizing runs large

Sizes: XS–6X / Colors: 24 options / Material: 60% cotton, 40% polyester

“While I’m also obsessed with the jogger version of these sweatpants, I find this wider, relaxed-fit cut chicer and easier to style for slightly dressier moments,” says Glamour commerce editor Jake Henry Smith. “The straight-leg design feels fresh, and the hems pool perfectly at the top of my shoes; I’m sure they’d be cute with slippers, but I actually prefer them with sneakers and black loafers. They can almost pass for trousers, and I don’t feel out of place among the well-dressed morning rush at my neighborhood coffee shop. (My partner couldn’t even tell that they were sweatpants at first.) They fit a little bit larger in the waist than I expected, but the drawstring waistband allowed me to tighten them as needed. I have pretty long legs, and the length is perfect for me; petite people might need to go with another pair. They’re fleece-lined and prone to collecting static electricity, but that’s my biggest gripe—this is still my favorite pair, shocks or not. It almost feels like cheating, since they’re both comfortable and stylish. I’m tempted to wear them to work at some point.”

Pros: Stylish, trendy look; super-soft fleece interior
Cons: Prone to static electricity

Sizes: XXS–XXL / Colors: 13 options / Material: 65% cotton, 35% polyester

“All the FP Movement sportswear pieces in my closet have held up for a surprisingly long time, including this candy-colored pair of sweatpants,” says Glamour contributor Alison Syrett Cleary, noting that most of them have outlasted her designer loungewear. “Even after years of constant washing and drying, they look exactly the same. I’m a big fan of the vintage-inspired look of this pair, which has a real ‘gym class circa 1999’ vibe. Unlike a lot of actual sweatpants from 30 years ago, though, this one has been thoughtfully cut to enhance all the right places (translation: ‘they give good butt’) and includes a not too high, not too low waistband that looks good both flipped down and as-is.”

Pros: Unique, hard-to-find design details; durable construction
Cons: Relatively limited sizing

Sizes: XS–XL / Colors: 7 options / Material: 70% cotton, 30% polyester

Best Cashmere: Quince Mongolian Cashmere SweatpantsOriginal image by Glamour reviewer Emily Sanli

6/12

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Sweatpants

Cashmere wool is known for its temperature-regulating properties, durability, and extreme softness and airiness. Glamour reviewer Emily ƞanli raves about her jogger pants from Quince: “I own a lot of cashmere, and these are definitely on the softer, higher-quality side. They’re so soft and flattering, and never get too hot or too cold,” she says. “I wear them to walk the dog, sleep, and lounge, and they never get stinky. You might think cashmere is high-maintenance, but all you have to do is wash them on cold or delicate, and then air-dry. The only thing to note is that there’s some fabric pilling, but I just use a fabric shaver to remove it.” Getting 100% cashmere at this price is basically unheard of—and you can buy the matching hoodie for just $120 more.

Pros: Soft, lightweight material; relatively affordable for cashmere
Cons: Material pills

Sizes: XS–XL / Colors: 8 options / Material: 100% cashmere

Most Stretchy: Spanx AirEssentials Tapered PantsOriginal image by Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle

7/12

Spanx AirEssentials Tapered Pants

These stretchy Spanx sweats really put the “air” in AirEssentials. “Not only are these pants breathable and buttery soft,” says Glamour senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle, “but they make for the perfect airport outfit. I style it with a matching crew and I’m ready to go.” Though you might know Spanx for its shapewear, its sweatpants are far from compressive. This pair is stretchy and lightweight, with a fit that tapers at the ankle, keeping out cold air (important during drafty flights). Better yet, there are three inseam lengths to choose from, offering just the right fit. Just note that there are no side pockets; the streamlined look comes at a slight inconvenience.

Pros: Breathable, soft fabric ideal for travel; elevated look
Cons: No pockets

Sizes: XS–3X in regular, petite, and tall / Colors: 4 options / Material: 47% modal, 46% polyester, 7% elastane

Most Simple: Uniqlo Sweatpants

Courtesy of brand

Cleary impulse-bought this unisex style on whim during a Uniqlo run, and it has become one of her most-worn styles. “When it starts to get cold, I’ll layer them over a pair of shorts when I’m heading to the gym—the silhouette is just slouchy enough to wear something underneath without it looking bulky,” she says. “And since the material is nice and durable, it can withstand the wear and tear of sweat, being balled up, and constant washing.” If you’re looking for a zero-fuss pair that’s made to last, you can’t do much better.

Pros: Timeless, easy-to-wear silhouette; ideal for layering
Cons: Men’s sizing

Sizes: XS–3XL / Colors: 4 options / Material: 88% cotton, 12% polyester

Best for Travel: Champion Powerblend Fleece Joggers

9/12

Champion Powerblend Fleece Joggers

This pair’s thick cuffs, wide elastic waistband, and thick polyester-cotton blend make it durable and easy to keep in place—so of course it’s great for travel. We also love the sleek, athleisure-minded design, which delivers on practicality and feels a cut above bulkier, less structured pairs; you’ll arrive at your destination without immediately feeling like you need to change. (Deep side pockets only help the cause.) Amazon reviewers have heaped on near-universal praise, calling out the soft feel and pill-resistant fabric; however, some note that sizing varies between colors, so you might have to do some trial and error to find the right size.

Pros: Wide waistband and cuffs stay in place; relatively affordable
Cons: Sizing is inconsistent across colors

Sizes: XS–3X / Colors: 14 options / Material: 50% cotton, 50% polyester

Best Classic: Buck Mason Vintage Interloop Sweatpants

10/12

Buck Mason Vintage Interloop Sweatpants

While it’s unfortunately pretty rare to find 100% cotton loungewear these days, Buck Mason’s classic sweats fit the bill perfectly. “This pair is almost identical to the ones you wore for gym class back in the day, but with a few major tweaks: soft cotton that gets better with each wash, earth tones that make heather gray look boring by comparison, and a more contemporary cut that’s the epitome of California cool,” Glamour editor Smith says. “I’ve been impressed with the quality of every Buck Mason piece I’ve owned, and these sweatpants are no exception. They’re so soft and feel like they’ll last for years to come. And since there’s no polyester to be found, there’s also zero pilling, meaning they won’t visibly age with each wash. Don’t expect the thickest material; this is a more lightweight pair for year-round wear, which I prefer.”

Pros: 100% cotton; easy-to-style colors
Cons: Could be thicker for extra warmth

Sizes: XS–XXL / Colors: 6 options / Material: 100% cotton

Best Designer: Mother Quickie Roller Cut Sweatpants

11/12

Mother Quickie Roller Cut Sweatpants

Most people are sleeping on the sweatpants from Mother, which is predominantly known for its jeans. “They are amazing for three reasons,” Cleary says of the label’s loungewear pants, of which she owns multiple pairs. “First, they are all made from this luxuriously thick cotton material that feels expensive and wonderful to wear; second, the waistband is extra-wide and flattering; and third, each style has an updated retro feel, like something you might’ve owned in high school, but better.” She loves this option right now for its wide legs that pool open at the bottom, versus a more standard jogger pair.

Pros: Trendy graphics; wide-leg cut looks elevated
Cons: Might be too long for petites

Sizes: XS–XL / Colors: 1 option / Material: 100% Cotton

Best Luxury: The Elder Statesman Daily Wide-Leg Sweatpants

Courtesy of brand

12/12

The Elder Statesman Daily Wide-Leg Sweatpants

“The way I see it, you could stock up on a bunch of cheap and just-okay sweatpants—or this one comfy, buttery-soft, totally perfect pair,” Cleary says of this draped design by cult-favorite label The Elder Statesman. “The little details, like a luxurious tie and a skinny drawstring waist juxtaposed with a baggy leg, make these cool enough to wear outside the house. They are also amazing for travel, as you’ll look totally pulled together but feel like you’re lounging around at home.” They’d be supercute over a bodysuit or with a cropped long-sleeve top; from there, you could either keep things casual with clogs or wear sandal heels to dress the whole look up.

Pros: High-end look and feel; premium fabric; saturated colors
Cons: Pricey; relatively limited sizing

Sizes: XS–L / Colors: 2 options / Material: 96% cotton, 4% cashmere
