With warmer weather on the way, it’s time to reup your collection of the best men’s swim trunks. The only problem? There are seemingly more options than ever—as a shopping editor and wearer of swim trunks, I should know—and it’s hard to tell what, exactly, is worth the money. Sure, any pair can get the job done, but shouldn’t we all be striving for something truly investment-worthy?

These days, staying on trend is about getting the length right. Super-short trunks have been popular recently, but inseams are starting to drop again; anything between five and seven inches is your best bet for 2024. While mesh lining is still super popular among retailers, more and more brands are introducing pairs with built-in boxer briefs and linerless options—great if you prefer the feeling of your usual underwear. On the looks front, vintage-inspired designs from swimsuit brands like J.Crew, Tombolo, and Bather are only getting more popular. (Call it the influence of stealth wealth.) Colors and patterns are still up to you, though—while butter yellow and burgundy are trending, go as low-key or as maximalist as you want to.

These do-it-all trunks are perfect for swimming, lounging on the beach, or just hanging out—they’re comfy and versatile enough to double as everyday shorts. The rich colors and preppy prints are great, but I’m most impressed by the stretch nylon itself; it offers just enough give for comfortable all-day wear, whether you’re crammed into the backseat of a car or lying out poolside, and it’s got a water-repellent finish.
