2024 Open Championship picks, odds: Surprising Sunday predictions from PGA golf model that’s nailed 13 majors
The final round of the 2024 Open Championship begins Sunday morning and it’s an intriguing top of the leaderboard mixed with big names and huge underdogs. Shane Lowry stumbled on his way to a 77 on Saturday, opening up the lead for Billy Horschel, who sits alone at 4 under entering Round 4. However, he’s being chased by six golfers who are at 3 under, most notably Sam Burns, Justin Rose and PGA champion Xander Schauffele. Masters winner Scottie Scheffler is 2 under, followed by Lowry at 1 under. The first tee times come at 2:35 a.m. ET on Sunday, while the final pairing begins at 9:25 a.m. ET.
Scheffler is the slight +330 favorite (risk $100 to win $330) in the 2024 Open Championship odds, followed by Schauffele at +375. Those two 2024 major winners are followed by Horschel (+650), Rose (+800), Henley (+1000) and Burns (+1000). Nine golfers are priced at +2600 or lower, setting up a thrilling Sunday at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. Before locking in any 2024 Open Championship picks for Sunday, be sure to see the 2024 British Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.
Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters, its third Masters in a row, and this year’s PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now with the Open Championship 2024 entering Sunday, SportsLine simulated the rest of the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 Open Championship predictions One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Open Championship on Sunday: Burns (+1000), who enters Sunday in the group that is just one shot off the lead, struggles Sunday and finishes outside the top five on the final leaderboard. There are better values available in the British Open odds.
Burns’ track record in majors makes him a fade in this spot. He’s finished better than 20th just once in his career and he’s never even cracked the top 40 at the British Open. His third-round 65 is what has him in position for Sunday, but the model is projecting that he won’t be able to hold that pace as he finishes last in the projections among all the golfers priced at +1000 or lower. See who else to fade here.
Another surprise: Lowry, a +2600 longshot, bounces back from a poor Saturday showing and stays in contention on Sunday. The 37-year-old Irish golfer let a golden opportunity slip away in Round 3 when he shot a 77 and gave up the lead. That poor showing has him at 1 under for the tournament and now three shots off the lead with a large group in front of him.
However, Lowry has shown the ability to go extremely low at any point during major play, just as he did in Round 1 (66) and Round 2 (69) this week. He’s the 2019 Open Championship winner and he has seven other top-10s in major play, so he should be confident heading into Sunday. The model has him finishing in front of multiple golfers who are just one shot off the lead, so he’s a strong value for Sunday British Open bets. See who else to back here.
How to make 2024 Open Championship picksThe model is also targeting an even bigger underdog who isn’t under par entering Round 4. Anyone who backs him could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.
