Fall’s biggest color trends are here to breathe new life into your wardrobe, and not a moment too soon. While summer was defined by sweet pastels, including petal pink and butter yellow, this season’s trends are shaping up to be much more saturated. Moody purples and deep browns appeared on many of our favorite fall runways, bringing major drama with minimal effort. On the brighter side, pops of grass green and pumpkin orange liven up sleepy outfits. And gray is cooler than ever right now—great news for anyone who shies away from bold hues. Here’s everything you need to know about autumn’s major color trends, including how to style them.

Grape, plum, wine—no matter your favorite shade of purple, you can’t go wrong with an ultra-saturated version of it this fall. Tibi, Lanvin, and Dries Van Noten showed tonal looks for autumn, while Gucci, Zankov, and Miu Miu applied shades of purple to accessories like fall boots. Dip your toes into the color with a wedding-guest dress, some ankle booties, or a soft sweater; go all in by pairing a jacket with corduroys or a leather skirt. And trust us: This unexpected shade garners so many compliments.

While vibrant green is most often associated with spring and summer—it’s the same color as fresh grass and budding leaves, after all—we’re more excited to style it for fall. Bally, Prada, and Saint Laurent all showed variations of the shade in this season’s shows, and we spotted tons of it at Copenhagen Fashion Week. (Brat summer never ends.) We recommend you lean into texture here, whether it’s sheer organza, slick nylon, fuzzy cashmere, or soft suede. Ground it with black, brown, and denim blue.

3. Smoke grayEdward Berthelot/Getty Images

When in doubt, go with gray. This season’s preeminent shade is a relatively light, wispy gray, as seen at Khaite and Calvin Klein. It’s right for pretty much any occasion, associated as much with corporate attire as with sweatpants. The color pairs well with everything in your closet, although you might just want to pile it on; these days, all-gray outfits read as luxe and expensive rather than lazy. (There’s a reason it’s a cornerstone of the whole stealth-wealth look.) Start with a sweater and matching trousers or a knit skirt, either for the office or a dinner date.

4. Chocolate brownRaimonda Kulikauskiene/Getty Images

After a bigger-than-usual autumn last year, chocolate brown is back and more relevant than ever for 2025. Relaxed, retro, and deliciously autumnal, the shade makes everything from fall jackets to suede bags look expensive—no wonder labels like Hermès and Fendi went big on it this season. Take a stroll around New York and you’ll see it absolutely everywhere, meaning it’s high time to invest in a few pieces for your fall capsule. And to put the debate to bed: Yes, you can pair dark brown with black. Try a chocolate dress with black kitten heels or a brown bag with a cashmere sweater.

5. Autumnal orangeRaimonda Kulikauskiene/Getty Images

It’s officially pumpkin season, and not just for our lattes. Rich, saturated orange was splashed across looks at Ashlyn, Acne Studios, Christopher John Rogers, and Saint Laurent this season, bringing some welcome energy into a typically sleepy cold-weather palette. If you’re worried about looking a little too Halloween, skip black in favor of complementary colors like burgundy, brown, and pink.
