His caddie is a well-known veteran in his field, who has been sticking with the Norwegian golfer since his early days. When Viktor Hovland started competing professionally in 2019, his search for a permanent caddie also began. In the meanwhile, it was his coach from Oklahoma State College who was his temporary caddie. After much searching, the Norwegian golfer met Australian bagman Shay Knight and they have been together ever since.

During their first meetup, Knight was a veteran of 15 years on the professional circuit while Hovland was just starting his career. Following their meeting in Mexico, Knight and the Norwegian golfer transitioned their formal meeting into a professional relationship with the assistance of Rickie Fowler’s caddie, Joe Skovron.

According to Knight, Skovron called him and asked if he wished to caddie for the then-amateur golfer Viktor Hovland. The Australian bagman promptly accepted this offer and began his journey with Hovland from the 2019 Travelers Championship.

Since then the two have been working together as a strong unit. Sticking with the 26-year-old through thick and thin has done wonders for Knight and it is evidently reflected in the huge earnings he accumulated in the 2023 season alone.

For the uninitiated, the caddies receive 10% of the paycheck for a golfer’s win, 7% for a top-10 finish, and 5% for other results. Viktor Hovland had nine top-10 finishes and three title wins in the 2023 season. He also finished runner-up at the PGA Championship. Just from winning the 2023 FedEx Cup, the Norwegian claimed a whopping $18 million prize.

Looking at the results of Hovland, his Australian caddie would have earned $360,000 from his three wins. Furthermore, Knight has added around $320,000 and $110,000 from the top-10 finishes and other results respectively. Adding all of them up lands the Hovland’s caddie at around $790,000 from the 2023 season alone.
