Manchester United ‘activate Aaron Wan-Bissaka contract extension’

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is reportedly staying at Manchester United until the summer of 2025, with the Red Devils extending the defender’s contract by an extra 12 months.

Manchester United have reportedly extended the contract of Aaron Wan-Bissaka by 12 months, committing him to the Red Devils until the summer of 2025.
The 26-year-old made the switch from Old Trafford from Crystal Palace in June 2019 and has since featured in 175 matches for the 20-time English champions, scoring twice.

Wan-Bissaka has not always been the first-choice right-back since Erik ten Hag was installed as manager at the start of last campaign, however the defender has started the last three matches.

Largely down to an embarrassment of riches for Gareth Southgate on the right side of his defence over the past few years, the former Eagles man is yet to receive an England call-up, however he has played three times for the Three Lions’ Under-21s side.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have triggered the option in Wan-Bissaka’s contract which commits him to the Ten Hag’s side until the end of the 2024-25 term.

Initial talks over an extension were held in September, however the discussions were put on hold whilst Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority takeover of the club.

The right-back was part of a significant contingent in the Red Devils dressing room who were set to be free agents in the summer, however United have supposedly opted to extend his deal by 12 months.

It is also understood that Man United will now open talks with Wan-Bissaka over increasing his salary at Old Trafford, with the defender currently earning £90,000 per week.

The Red Devils are said to have extended the deal of Wan Bissaka’s teammate Victor Lindelof, who is in the process of rehabilitation from an injury sustained in November.

Despite United looking to retain some of their first-team defenders for next season, it is believed that the extension clause in Raphael Varane’s contract will not be triggered.

The ex-Real Madrid man is on a weekly wage of £350,000 on the red side of Manchester – a figure which is judged as too expensive by United’s owners.

It has been claimed that the World Cup winner feels as if he is being forced out of Old Trafford, with rumours circulating that the Frenchman and head coach Ten Hag have fallen out.

A scenario in which Varane could stay at United involves the defender taking a significant wage cut rather than remaining on the same salary for another 12 months.

With Diogo Dalot continuing to fill in at left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw, Wan-Bissaka is in line to start his fourth-straight match as Man United travel to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on Monday night.
