HBO Snags Lil Nas X Documentary ‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’

Lil Nas X jumps on the concert documentary train with ‘Long Live Montero’ debuting on HBO on January 27, a film that captures his first global tour across 60 days.HBO has announced the debut of Lil Nas X’s concert documentary, which had its world premiere last year at the Toronto Film Festival. “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” releases on the network on January 27 at 8 PM ET, and will also stream on demand on Max. The documentary follows the artist across 60 days as he performs his “Long Live Montero” tour to support his 2021 debut album, Montero.

Lil Nas X, born Montero Hill, discusses his career and his place in the pop and rap world as a queer Black performer. Zac Manuel (Alone, Buckjumping, Nonstop) and Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting, Summertime, Raya and the Last Dragon), the latter of whom has, in addition to his filmmaking credits, directed music videos for artists that include Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, and Carly Rae Jepsen, directed the film.

HBO Documentary Films is presenting the film alongside Sony Music Entertainment and Columbia Records, a production by RadicalMedia in association with Museum & Crane.“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” is produced by Dave Sirulnick, Caryn Capotosto, Saul Levitz, Adam Leber, Gee Roberson, Adriana Arce, and Hodo Musa, and executive produced by Meredith Bennett, Jon Kamen, Frank Scherma, Tom Mackay, Ron Perry, and Krista Wegener.

Lil Nas X first broke into the mainstream with “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus, which spent 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the longest-running No. 1 hit in the chart’s lifetime.

He won two Grammy awards for the song: Best Music Video and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Some of his other hits include “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” “That’s What I Want,” and “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow.
