SMITE 2 Should Be Coming in March

SMITE, the third-person MOBA game should be getting a second iteration, which is not a sequel, but something akin to what CS2 is to CS:GO called SMITE 2

SMITE celebrated it’s 10th birthday as a full game this year, with SMITE World Championships X only one day aways. Even Hi-Rez Studio’s and Titan Forge Games’ TPS MOBA holds up well, the limitations of it’s engine, Unreal Engine 3 are starting to show.

There were talks about SMITE 2 for a few months now, but it seems like the sequel (or complete remaster) of the game is really coming in 2024 – if you can trust the game’s biggest leaker and dataminer, SMITE Datamining.

SMITE 2 is (Allegedly) Coming in a Few Months
After riling up the community with a cryptic post, popular datamining account SMITE Dataminings revealed that mentions of SMITE 2 have been found in the data of the current version. In the files, a SMITE 2 Founders pack was revealed, which could provide early access to the new game’s alpha or beta build.

This discovery also prompts that Hi-Rez Studios should announce the sequel to SMITE in the upcoming SMITE World Championship, which is starting on January 12th.

What is coming in SMITE 2?
SMITE 2 has been talked about for a long time now. The current game is old, with it’s first broadly playable builds being more than 10 years old. It’s also built on Unreal Engine 3, which is an old game engine compared to what we’re used to today. But it’s age is not the biggest issue with UE3 – it’s the fact that you can’t upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 from it like you can from UE4 to UE5.

This meant that the developers had to build the new version of SMITE from scratch, which is why it took so long. Revamping a game could take years – as seen with many remasters and remakes.

Should SMITE 2 come out?
In the last few years, multiple games have upgraded from Unreal Engine 4 to 5, such as CS:GO (becoming CS2) and Fortnite, which kept it’s name, but has a very different look from what it started out with. Both games got new animations, new mechanics – such as CS2’s adaptive smoke – as well as tons of possibilities to expand upon them. As I said, SMITE holds up well for a 10+ year old game, but a new look wouldn’t hurt.

It would also help draw in new players. The only TPS MOBA on the market (no, the Paragon remakes don’t count) had a loyal, but stagnant playerbase for years. Same goes to it’s esports scene, which holds some incredible moments, but the interest in it is not as high as it should be. A new look could be used for marketing, as well as ensuring the longevity of the game – if Hi-Rez allocated so much resources of creating a sequel/revamp to their game, they are sure to continue supporting it.

While SMITE Datamining’s info is promising to say the least, nothing is set in stone yet. The 10th SMITE World Championship is starting tomorrow – hopefully, Titan Forge Games will announce SMITE 2 before the action begins!
