“Mean Girls” Turns 20 This Year, So Here’s What The Cast Is Up To Now

The movie Mean Girls was a cultural reset. Not only did it launch the careers of celebs like Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, but it also gave us some truly incredible funny moments that still make people laugh to this day.

It’s so iconic that Paramount decided to reboot the movie and combine it with the 2017 musical adaptation into a new film that comes out in theaters Jan. 12. 

And this year, the movie turned 20 years old! So to celebrate, let’s see what the cast is up to now, two decades later.

1.

First, Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron:

What she’s been up to: Lindsay continued acting after Mean Girls and had roles in Just My Luck, Herbie Fully Loaded, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. She took a brief hiatus from acting during the 2010s only making a few select cameos, but has since made her grand return to Hollywood with the movie Falling for Christmas. She is currently working on a movie called Irish Wish, which is set to come out later this year. Last summer, Lindsay also welcomed her first child with her husband Bader Shammas. She recently reprised her role of Cady Heron in Walmart’s Mean Girls-themed commercial for Black Friday along with some other members of the cast.

Rachel McAdams as Regina George:

What she’s been up to: Rachel continued acting and gained critical acclaim for her breakout role in The Notebook, which came out a few months after Mean Girls. She’s since starred in movies like Game Night, About Time, Midnight in Paris, The Family Stone, Disobedience, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Doctor Strange, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, and more. This year, she’s set to make her Broadway debut in the play Mary Jane.

What she’s been up to: Lacey continued acting and had a recurring role as Dr. Amy Shaw on the Freeform series Baby Daddy. She has also starred in over 30 Hallmark movies and worked on many other voice-over projects, too. She’s even been deemed the Queen of Hallmark Holiday Movies. Lacey and her husband David Nehdar welcomed their first baby in 2016, and in 2022, she launched her own clothing line called the “Lacey Chabert Collection,” which was sold on the Home Shopping Network. She also joined Lindsay in returning to her Mean Girls roots in Walmart’s Black Friday commercial.

Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith:

What she’s been up to: Amanda has continued acting and has starred in movies and TV shows like Mamma Mia!, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Mank, The Crowded Room, Jennifer’s Body, Veronica Mars, Big Love, Les Misérables, Dear John, Letters to Juliet, and more. She also portrayed Elizabeth Holmes in the miniseries The Dropout, for which she won an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for her performance. In 2017, she married Thomas Sadoski, who was her costar in The Last Word. They have two children together. Most recently, she joined Lindsay and Lacey in reprising her Mean Girls role in Walmart’s Black Friday commercial.

Jonathan Bennett as Aaron Samuels:

What he’s been up to: Jonathan has continued to act but has also begun hosting as well. He’s hosted Cake Wars and Halloween Wars, which both air on the Food Network. He even worked with celebrity chef Nikki Martin to create The Burn CookBook. In 2022, he starred in Hallmark’s first LGBTQ-led movie, The Holiday Sitter. He is also set to make his Broadway debut in Spamalot later this month.

What she’s been up to: Lizzy continued acting and is known for her roles in TV shows and movies like Party Down, Fleishman is in Trouble, Cloverfield, Masters of Sex, the Now You See Me movies, New Girl, and more. She and her husband, Tom Riley, have one child together.

Daniel Franzese as Damian:

What he’s been up to: Daniel continued acting and is known for his role as Eddie on the HBO series Looking. He has also written, directed, and starred in several comedy shows, including his one-man off-Broadway show I’ve Never Really Made the Kind of Money to Become a Mess. He currently co-hosts the podcast Yass, Jesus!, a “faith and sexuality affirming comedy podcast that believes you don’t have to pick between gay and God.” He was among the original Mean Girls cast members to reprise his role in Walmart’s Black Friday commercial.

What he’s been up to: Rajiv stepped away from acting after losing his bid for the starring role in the movie Life of Pi, which ultimately went to Suraj Sharma. In 2016, he released a memoir titled, The Elephants in My Backyard, where he recounts the journey of auditioning for the Life of Pi role and acknowledges the many parallels between his own upbringing and the movie’s main character, Pi. After losing out on the role, he moved to Munich, Germany, and worked as an au pair. He later moved back to the US and started working as a calligrapher. In 2023, Rajiv also reprised his Mean Girls role in the Walmart commercial.

What she’s up to now: Nicole stepped away from acting and now works as a resident physician at the University of Toronto with a specialty in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She is also a freelance artist and shares a lot of her work on her professional Instagram page. In 2020, she published a children’s book called Patty and the Pandemic that set out to teach young children about how to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tina Fey as Ms. Norbury:

What she’s been up to: Tina continued acting, producing, and writing for TV. She created or executive produced shows like 30 Rock, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Girls5Eva. She has also starred in movies and TV shows like Baby Mama, Date Night, Only Murders in the Building, Sisters, Whisky Tango Foxtrot, A Haunting in Venice, and so much more. She has won numerous awards for her work over the years, including nine Emmys, three Golden Globes, five Screen Actors Guild awards, and seven Writers Guild awards — she is even the youngest person to have won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. In 2017, the Broadway adaptation of Mean Girls debuted, which she and her husband Jeff Richmond worked on together. And now in 2024, the movie adaptation of the musical is coming out in theaters and she is reprising her role as Ms. Norbury.

What she’s been up to: Amy continued acting and she is best known for her role as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation. She has also produced several projects including  Welcome to Sweden, Broad City, Difficult People, Duncanville, Three Busy Debras, and Russian Doll. She and her close friend Tina Fey have continued to collaborate and have starred together in Baby Mama, Sisters, and Wine Country. In 2023 she started an improv comedy podcast called Say More with Dr? Sheila, where she plays a fictional couples therapist and gives life advice to her clients.

Tim Meadows as Mr. Duvall:

What he’s been up to: Tim has continued acting and is best known for his role as John Glascott on The Goldbergs and its short-lived spinoff, Schooled. He’s also best known as one of Saturday Night Live’s longest-running cast members with ten seasons of the show under his belt.  He’s been in a ton of other movies and TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Dream Scenario, Grown Ups, Trainwreck, 30 Rock, Girls5Eva, Poker Face, The Mandalorian, and so much more. Tim is also reprising his role as Mr. Duvall in the 2024 Mean Girls adaptation.

What she’s been up to: Ana continued acting and has been in TV shows and movies like Suburgatory, Happiest Season, Wine Country, People of Earth, The Lion Guard, The Goldbergs, The Good Wife, and more. In 2019, she released a holiday album called Sugar & Booze, which was accompanied by an Audible comedy piece called Holiday Greetings from Sugar and Booze, starring Ana, Maya Rudolph, Oscar Nunez, and Patti LuPone. Most recently, she starred on the NBC sitcom American Auto.

What he’s been up to: Neil has continued acting and is best known for TV shows like Scrubs and The Middle. He can also be found in projects like That ’70s Show, Smallville, CSI, Abby’s, Lopez vs Lopez, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Fugitive. Neil has done his fair share of voice-over work as well and voiced a few characters in the video game Ratchet & Clank.
