Wakerunners: Blending League of Legends with Overwatch

A new contender is stepping up to the plate in the PvP Arena market and its name is Wakerunners. This all-new, high-octane multiplayer title is sure to make a splash in the competitive scene, thanks to how it has been built by developer Mintrocket. It’s a far cry from Mintrocket’s most recent titles, but that’s not necessarily bad, as diversity is the key to success, right? There’s a new, short-form trailer available that perfectly showcases the energy wrapped up in Wakerunners – check it out below.

At first blush, Wakerunners is a perfect blend of many of the industry’s most popular competitive titles. It has elements of a hero shooter mixed in with some of the visual aspects of a MOBA. There’s a host of characters to assume control of, many of which will become cosplay icons once the game has been released – and perhaps before that.

What is Wakerunners?

From the developer of the award-winning title, Dave the Diver comes Wakerunners, a top-down multiplayer game set across a range of smaller-than-usual arena-based maps. In the short trailer that was revealed by Mintrocket, Wakerunners looks fast-paced, punchy, and highly energetic. It boasts sumptuous colours, exciting character models, and a unique enough gameplay loop that should help it stand apart from the competition.

As I’ve already stressed, it fuses elements of other games – and it looks as though it does it quite well. On the surface, it looks reminiscent of League of Legends, but having interchangeable and swapping hero characters gives it an Overwatch vibe. Here’s the trailer:

Mintrocket’s most recent project, Dave the Diver, boasts a rare 10/10 rating on Steam, with the 83,065 reviews bearing a ranking of ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’. That’s enough to believe that Wakerunners should be off to a flying start – the developer has proven that it’s a capable enough company.

Wakerunners can be wishlisted now on PC but there’s a demo coming soon, so excited, potential fans can get hands-on with the game from February 5 onwards. During the demo period, players will get to grips with a range of characters and sample some of the game modes available in Wakerunners, such as Control Conquest, Team Deathmatch, Command Siege, and Raider Mode.

Nothing has been confirmed yet regarding the operating model for Wakerunners, but it’s expected that it’ll be a free-to-play title supported by seasons and microtransactions. Also, it looks as though it’ll be exclusively available to PC players.

Could this be the next best esports game to keep an eye on?
