Tottenham Hotspur confirm Lucas Bergvall signing on five-and-a-half-year deal

Tottenham Hotspur confirm the signing of 18-year-old Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens IF on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Swedish protege Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens IF on a five-and-a-half-year deal.
The 18-year-old – whose arrival was announced on his birthday on Friday – has committed his future to Ange Postecoglou’s side until 2029 and is believed to have cost the Lilywhites approximately ÂŁ8.5m.

Bergvall will spend the next five months with Djurgarden before linking up with his new club on July 1, and he becomes their third signing of the winter window after Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin.

La Liga champions Barcelona were initially leading the race to prise the midfielder away from Scandinavia, but Tottenham successfully hijacked the Blaugrana’s bid during the final knockings of the January window.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League, the best league in the world,” Bergvall said during his first interview with Tottenham’s media channels.

“It’s a really good club with a great manager and a really hungry and young team. They play some really good football and it’s really, really fun to watch, so it’s a pleasure for me to join this big club.

“It feels like it’s the beginning of an era with a really great coach Ange. He’s a really great man and he gives lots of young players a chance on the big stage. I am a young player and I know that, but I like to help the team.

“Growing up, football was everything with my two brothers. We grew up playing a lot of football in the backyard. My mum played in the first division and my dad also played at a pretty high level in Sweden.

“I would say I’m a box-to-box player who really likes to have the ball at my feet and take it forward into the pitch. It’s time for me to move onto the biggest stage and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Bergvall was an academy prospect at Brommapojkarna before joining Djurgardens in a ÂŁ770,000 deal in February 2023, and he made an immediate impact in the first team for the Allsvenskan club.

The 2006-born midfielder – who stands at 6ft 1in tall – recorded two goals and one assist in 25 top-flight matches in his debut season, making 11 starts and playing the full 90 in each of his side’s final five games.

On January 12, Bergvall earned his first senior cap for Sweden, coming off the bench in a 2-1 friendly win over Estonia.
