Snl24 | How much Sundowns could demand for Mokoena

Teboho Mokoena performed the Cristiano Ronaldo ‘sleep’ celebration, causing a huge reaction on social media.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena has reportedly attracted interest from overseas clubs after a stellar showing for Bafana Bafana at AFCON. Kickoff looks at how much the Brazilians could demand for his services.

Mokoena played one of his best games in a Bafana shirt in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 against Morocco, after he showed his class in anchoring the midfield and showed dynamism in his game, with his ability and engine to drive forward, take shots at goal and scored contender for Goal of the Tournament, a second goal in stoppage time that secured a 2-0 win for South Africa.

With Bafana being the side with the most locally-based players at the AFCON, the majority from the Brazilians, the 27-year-old is one of the players who has attract interest from overseas clubs, with Monaco and an unnamed Premier League side having enquired about Mokoena’s services, according to Soccer Laduma.

The former SuperSport United midfielder would not come cheap, considering that he is ranked number two in the PSL in terms of market valuation, at €2, 2 million (+-R44, 6 million), by transfer website Transfermarkt.

However, the market valuation of players does not represent the true value of demand and supply and judging by the bigger outgoing transfers made by Sundowns in recent years, they could demand at least double the current valuation.

At least from the transfer of Bongani Zungu, who was valued at R4,9 million by Transfermarkt in late 2015 before he left for Vitoria Guimaraes, the Tshwane giants initially reportedly rejected a R9.17 million offer from the Portuguese side.

Zungu was left with six months on his contract and in January 2016 signed a pre-contract with Guimaraes, where the Brazilians missed out on a substantial transfer fee.

Sundowns made another big out-going transfer after they sold Percy Tau to Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018, for a PSL record outgoing transfer fee of R50 million (£3,1 million at the time).

Tau was valued at €2 million (R32 million) by Transfermarkt in 2018, as Masandawana rejected a few offers from Brighton before it was increased to R50 million.

With Mokoena currently valued at R44, 6 million by Transfermarkt, Sundowns could demand at least around R90 million, which will far exceed the current PSL outgoing transfer held by Tau.

The Bethlehem native’s transfer fee will also be raised by the fact that his current contract with the Brazilians runs until June 2025, with a one year option.
