Snl24 | ‘Are Downs Signing Just For The Sake Of It?’

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro Ernest “Wire” Mtawali has hit out at the Brazilians’ transfer activity, speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma.
Mtawali, who had once played with Diego Maradona and also represented Newell Old Boys in Argentina, takes a look at Sundowns’ latest transfer spending.

In the January Transfer Window period Downs had signed four players in Zuko Mdunyelwa, Matias Esquivel, Tashreeq Matthews and Thembinkosi Lorch, but the Wire is not impressed with the club’s business.
“If you look at the squad that Sundowns have you can see that they didn’t need to sign any new players. I am just wondering whether they are just signing for the sake of signing or if they want to reinforce the team? How do you reinforce an already strong team which is already doing well? All the new four players in my opinion were not a necessity at all at the moment. I think they just sign for the sake of it which is not good for the club,” Mtawali told Soccer Laduma.
The Malawian born former Orlando Pirates midfielder added that to prove that Sundowns have enough quality, they have 10 Bafana Bafana players and one Namibia star at Afcon in Ivory Coast.

“That’s where quality is. That’s how you see that there is quality. Then why do you need to add other players who are not even national team players at all? If one team has 11 players at a big tournament like Afcon then that team has a quality squad.
“I don’t understand why you would want to beef up such a squad at this point. Seriously I don’t know if there was a need to sign these four players in January. Not just one but all of them,” Mtawali concluded.
One of the reasons Sundowns may have felt they did need to reinforce the squad is that they have already played the same number of games that a South African team normally plays in a full season. They are only half-way through the campaign and their players would also be fatigued after performing at the Africa Cup of Nations.
It can be argued that the Brazilians will need fresh legs for the second half of this very demanding campaign which could be a long season, when you also consider the Caf Champions League still has a long way to go.
