Snl24 | Kekana: Williams can even save South Africa’s economy

Grant Kekena claims that his club and national team teammate Ronwen Williams has the ability to even save South Africa’s economy.

Following Ronwen Williams’ monumental shot-stopping performance against Cape Verde in the Africa Cup of Nations, the goalkeepers’ teammate Grant Kekana claims that his captain even has the ability to save the South African economy.

It took an incredible performance in goal from the Gqeberha native in the penalty shoot-out in order for Bafana Bafana to make it to their first AFCON semi-final in 24 years.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star first pulled off a massive save in the dying embers of regulation time, before coming up with the goods again during penalties as he saved four spot kicks from the Blue Sharks.

It was the first time at this continental showpiece a goalkeeper saved a penalty during a shoot-out and it seems that it is not only the public who are singing his praises, but so are his teammates as his Masandawana defensive partner Kekana lauded the 32-year-old for his heroic performance against perhaps the most in-form team at the continental competition.

Asked about what he thought of the Man of the Match’s display in Yamoussoukro and the central defender said: “Yeah, world class keeper. All I can say is that I think he should be made the Minister of Finance, he can save South Africa’s economy.”

Since being inserted into Hugo Broos’ starting XI, Kekana has helped his Bafana side keep four consecutive clean sheets and when he was quizzed on what that has done for his confidence personality.

He said: “Listen, I think we all work hard in the team. Whoever gets given the chance, has to grab it with both hands and that’s what I tried to do. We get backing from each other as players.

“We’re fortunate at [Mamelodi] Sundowns we play a lot of these competitive games, so it gave us a boost to understand what’s expected from us.”
