Mamelodi Sundowns may have found a solution after looking at offloading two of their foreign players to create a space for the quota system to register newly signed Argentinian player Matias Esquivel.

Siya sources at the club have indicated that even though the Brazilians were seemingly in the process of releasing Zimbabwean player Divine Lunga and Ethiopian Abubeker Nasir, they have now found another way to register Esquivel.Ā

This could be by deregistering fellow Argentinian player Junior Mendieta who is believed be out injured.

The sources have added that the club management and the technical team have discussed this problem and felt that Esquivel could take up Mendieta’s place on the foreign quota system until the end of the season.

“The way things are now Matias (Esquivel) will take the place of his countryman Junior Mendieta who is out injured and his injury will apparently keep him out for the rest of the season. You know the team was looking at deregistering two of their foreign players but this condition will give them the chance to even register Esquivel without even deregistering those players,” said the Siya source.

“That’s what they are working on now so that he can start playing as soon as the season resumes after the Afcon break,” the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source stated that the club is still working on how to plan around the futures of Nasir and Lunga.

“As far as Abubeker is concerned, he is also still injured and he wouldn’t be playing any time soon. But they are looking at registering Divine Lunga as a local as they have applied for his Permanent Resident Permit (PRP). So they are looking at different ways on how they can register Esquivel as soon as they can. But for now he will be registered because Mendieta will be out for the rest of the season. They will work on the other foreign quota at the end of the season,” the source observed.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club didn’t respond by the time this story was published.
