During the latest iteration of African football’s biggest tournament, host nation Ivory Coast suffered their biggest home defeat to Equatorial Guinea. It was a 4-0 loss to the minnow nation and the coach at the time was Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset.
The defeat put the Elephants’ aspirations of making it to the knockout stage at risk, with the Ivorian Football Federation ultimately deciding it would be best to part ways with the 70-year-old during the competition.
This proved to be a masterstroke as his replacement, Emerse Fae, went on to guide the team to 2023 AFCON triumph.

Despite his poor showing at the continental showpiece, Gasset has already landed himself another job, this time with Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille, who confirmed his appointment after the dismissal of Gennaro Gattuso.
In an official statement released by the French giants, the club said: “An experienced coach with both club and country, Jean-Louis Gasset has spent over 30 years on the bench in the French league and abroad.
“His experience as assistant or head coach at Girondins de Bordeaux, AS Saint-Etienne, Montpellier HSC and PSG has made him one of France’s most experienced coaches, and has seen him win 4 French Championships (2009, 2014, 2015, 2016), 2 French Cups (2015, 2016) and 4 League Cups (2009, 2014, 2015, 2016).

“Renowned for his tactical expertise, his ability to interact with players, his ability to mobilise the different groups he has coached and his hard-working culture, the Montpellier native has also had the opportunity to put his skills to good use at international level with the Cote d’Ivoire national team, Equipe de France and Espanyol.”
