Why, in 2024, Do Award Shows Still Have Gendered Acting Categories?

2023 should have been Liv Hewsonā€™s year. The 27-year-old actor quickly became a fan favorite on the Showtime series Yellowjackets, playing the tough-as-nails, secretly soft-hearted queer soccer goalie Van Palmer to perfection. But when Emmys season rolled around, a long-standing issue with the traditionally gendered award-show format reared its head again: Hewson, who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, ultimately chose not to submit themself for consideration. Hewson told Variety, ā€œThereā€™s not a place for me in the acting categories. It would be inaccurate for me to submit myself as an actress. It neither makes sense for me to be lumped in with the boys. Itā€™s quite straightforward and not that loaded. I canā€™t submit myself for this because thereā€™s no space for me.ā€

Hewson belongs to a spate of nonbinary and gender-nonconforming actors who have found themselves at a crossroads during awards season, torn between receiving industry recognition for their work and being seen as their authentic selves. Of course, nonbinary stars are not a monolith, and, accordingly, different performers have found different ways to navigate the gender segregation of award shows: The Last of Us star Bella Ramsay chooses to compete in female acting categories despite ā€œbeing aware that itā€™s not ideal.ā€ The Crownā€™s Emma Corrin noted in 2022 that they ā€œdonā€™t think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment,ā€ and Billionsā€™s Asia Kate Dillonā€”the first nonbinary actor to be cast as a nonbinary character in a series regular roleā€”first put out the call to take gender out of the award-show equation with an open letter to the Television Academy in 2017.

There are more nonbinary and gender-nonconforming actors on TV and in film than ever before, from Pose star Indya Moore to And Just Like Thatā€¦ scene-stealer Sara Ramirez to 2024 best-actress nominee Lily Gladstone (who uses she/they pronouns and has described themself as ā€œmiddle-genderedā€)ā€”so why are award shows like the upcoming Oscars still clinging to a format that forces honorees to essentially pick a gender and stick with it? As anti-trans legislation advances in dozens of US states and trans youths like Nex Benedict are targeted for their gender identity, itā€™s hard not to feel like the award-show circuit is long overdue for a change of approach.Ā 

Granted, making the shift from ā€œbest actor/actressā€ categories to a less gendered iteration would be a challenge for the Academy, a body that isnā€™t exactly known for its emphasis on diversity. It took the explosion of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag in 2015 for the Oscars to even begin to reckon with their long history of excluding and tokenizing Black actors and artists, and straight, cis performers are still far more likely than their LGBTQ+ peers to be recognized (indeed, even for playing queer roles). Yet doesnā€™t an institution that still dictates much of whatā€™s considered ā€œthe bestā€ in the film industry have an obligation to at least attempt to reflect the strides made by the LGBTQ+ (and, more specifically, nonbinary and trans) communities? And anyway, at the Oscars, as at other award shows, none of the non-acting categoriesā€”for best director or editing or costume design or original song, ā€”are divided the same way.

ā€œIn television, when youā€™re looking at the gender identity of whoā€™s hired in key roles across production and above and below the line, there is such a small representation of nonbinary people and trans people of all genders, and a large reason for that is because of the systemic barriers that exist in the industry. For someone to get to the point in their career where their work is being recognized by their peers at a very high level, and then, as a nonbinary person, being told ā€˜Well, there isnā€™t really a place for you here,ā€™ it just breaks my heart,ā€ says Andria Wilson Mirza of the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization Women in Film. The often-invoked argument that gender-neutral awards categories would make women more likely to be overlooked, Mirza adds, is ā€œjust not accurate.ā€ Indeed, the Independent Spirit Awards, the MTV Movie and TV Awards, and the Berlin Film Festival have all embraced gender-neutral acting awards without controversy, proving that it is possible to reward performers for genre-defining work without separating them into binary gendered categories.

It should be said that the Oscars arenā€™t quite what they were 20, or even 10, years ago; viewership just keeps dropping, largely thanks to the rise of streaming, but also perhaps in part because of the outdated cultural norms that the show (and Hollywood as a whole) continues to reinforce. If the powers that be want the Oscars to feel relevant to the world beyond the film industry, we (and, perhaps more urgently, the largely white, straight and male members of the Academy) need to face the reality of gender in America in 2024. Itā€™s quite famously not a binary, nor has it ever been, so thereā€™s no reason that virtually every major award show should continue to treat it as one.
