Former Kaizer Chiefs full-back Themba Seli has made a bold statement regarding the club’s recruitment policy.

Following young Wandile Duba’s great performance in Amakhosi’s 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows, Seli says history has proved that Gauteng-born players understand the club’s playing culture.

The 19-year-old Lenasia-born striker’s confidence on the field saw him scoring what is viewed by many as a serious contender for the Goal Of The Season award.

“The problem at Kaizer Chiefs is that they are no longer scouting players from kasi, they’ve lost identity,” Seli tells KickOff.

“Where are the players from Orlando, Alexandra in this current Chiefs team?

“Where are the Thabo Mookis, Thabang Lebeses, Shakes Kungwanes, and Doctor Khumalos in this current Kaizer Chiefs team?

“The Kasi flavor is what is missing in this Kaizer Chiefs team.

“Chiefs management must go back to their roots, the ancestors are not happy. They are not recognising the kind of football that is being played.

“Stop buying players who don’t understand our football culture, just go to the townships and get streetwise players.

“Get Farouk Khan and appoint him as the club’s head of development.

“Remember the great job he did with the likes of Skaapie Malatsi, they were still young when they were promoted to the first team.

“Bring back the likes of Teenage Dladla, Zebulon Nhlapo, Thabo Mooki, let them come and instil the club’s culture in these boys.

“I’m not saying players from other provinces can’t play football, but nowadays Chiefs looks more like a white team, sometimes they are too direct, hence teams no longer fear them.

“In Orlando, there are teams like Black Poison, I’m sure they have some good players in their team who can bring back the glory days in Naturena. They must learn from their rivals Pirates, they only go for players with kasi flavour.”

On Saturday at FNB Stadium, Amakhosi will face Orlando Pirates in what is one of the biggest football matches in South Africa.
