NPFL: Red card galore in Owerri, Remo Stars defeat Finidi George’s Enyimba, and Sporting Lagos remain winless on the road

It was another entertaining matchday in the Nigeria Professional Football League, this time, a midweek affair. Soccernet.ng reports all of the action that ensued in the Nigerian top-flight league.

Plateau United took on Gombe United in the early kick-off fixture. Alexander Enejo broke the deadlock at the New Jos Stadium in the second half, before Silas Nenrot put his foot on the throttle to score a hat-trick and take the match ball home. Following their 4-0 win, Plateau United are now second on the league table, two points behind league leaders, Lobi Stars.

Akwa United added to Bendel Insurance’s woes with a 3-1 win. A brace from John Friday and another goal from Sani Suleiman cancelled out Zaidu Ayuba’s late first-half goal for Monday Odigie’s boys.

Shooting Stars won away from home, as they defeated Doma United by a lone goal. Gideon Monday’s first-half strike was enough to seal all three points for Gbenga Ogunbote’s side at the Isa Pantami Stadium. Doma are now without a win in their last five games, losing four.

It rained red cards in Owerri, but the Red Hearts won it for Heartland against Abia Warriors as they picked up three points for the first time since December 2023. Two red cards were shown in the game as each team had a player sent off, but a brace from Onyekachi Okafor was enough for the Naze Millionaires.

Kano Pillars played a 1-1 draw against Enugu Rangers, and a lone goal from Mohammed Alao won the game for Kwara United on home soil against Bayelsa United.

It rained goals in Benue as Lobi Stars defeated Rivers United 3-2 to remain top of the NPFL, fueling a dream to win their third League title.

Sporting Lagos could not find their goal-scoring touch in Niger State as they fell to a defeat to Niger Tornadoes despite their weekend Derby win over Remo Stars.

Remo Stars defeated the NPFL defending Champions, Enyimba, in Ikenne. Adams Olamilekan came off the bench again to score the only goal of the game, just like he did against Bayelsa United two weeks ago.

The sun shone brightly in Akure as Ibrahim Yusuf’s first-half goal secured the win for Sunshine Stars against Katsina United.

The title race now heats up between the top five teams as just four points separate them and the scramble for safety at the bottom continues as the gap remains ever so close.
