Notable Missing Teams

Indiana, Memphis and Ole Miss announced prior to Selection Sunday that their teams would not accept a bid to NIT. Washington was also expected to decline the invite, per Percy Allen of the Seattle Times.

Indiana will instead focus on roster building and the upcoming opening of the transfer portal, according to Mike Schumann of the Daily Hoosier, while Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard cited “timing” as the reason behind his decision.

After Selection Sunday announcements were made, St. Johns, Oklahoma and Pitt announced they would decline an NIT invitation, according to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and WPXI’s Jenna Harner.

Syracuse, which finished the regular season 20-12, notably not included in the NIT bracket.

Notable NIT Teams

Indiana State, which finished the regular-season atop the Missouri Valley Conference with a 28-6 record, was among the first four out of the NCAA Tournament. Now they are set to start off the NIT against SMU.

The Sycamores were ranked 29th in NET, making them the highest-ranked team to be left out of the field of 68 since the NCAA started using the metric during the 2018-19 season, according to Zion Brown of the Indianapolis Star.

Kansas State was not one of the eight Big 12 teams selected for the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks will now take on No. 3 Iowa in the first round.

The team with the fewest wins to make the NIT field is 16-17 Xavier, which will open the tournament against 17-16 Georgia.

Cornell will enter the NIT for the first time with a visit to No. 2 Ohio State, while reigning NIT champions North Texas will face LSU in the first round.
