Michael Penix Jr. is drawing interest ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
In an appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that team’s are “intrigued” by Penix and that while he is viewed as a second-or-third-round prospect, he could slide up into the opening round.
“Michael Penix Jr. in Washington, big-time arm,” Fowler said. “A lot of teams are intrigued by him. Some consider him a Day 2 pick, but he could slide into the first round and maybe this Pro Day will help. He’s got the great deep ball. Teams want to see how he works that short to intermediate-type range to see how accurate he can be.”
Penix had a sensational season for Washington in 2023, leading the team to a 15-1 record and an appearance in the National Championship. He threw for 4,903 yards with 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to help lead the charge, and had over 13,700 career passing yards.
Still, the issues align with his injury history and older age for the draft. He will be 24-years-old for his rookie season and has suffered two torn ACL’s and two shoulder surgeries during his collegiate career. These came during his time with Indiana, and he has had clean health during his time in Washington, but it does serve as a concern for a team looking to invest in him as a franchise quarterback.
Still, his physical tools rival many talented quarterbacks in the NFL and he could thrive in the right situation. A team with a strong talent and a positive culture could get a great value with Penix, and it’s something to look for heading into the Draft.
