UNC quarterback Drake Maye will reportedly meet with Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury before he takes part in his Pro Day on Thursday in Chapel Hill.
Albert Breer of MMQB reported the news on the Commanders’ trio, which is coming into town after taking in the LSU Pro Day, which notably featured another top quarterback prospect, Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.
In essence, the draft really starts at No. 2, where it’s unclear who the Washington Commanders will choose with their pick. At this juncture, it’s clear they’re going quarterback, especially after dealing Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks.
But will the Commanders select Daniels, Maye or maybe even Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, who is picking up a ton of steam in the pre-draft process?
Maye is a big favorite of the B/R NFL Scouting Department, to the point where he’s ranked third overall on its 2024 draft big board and first among quarterbacks. For a long time, he was placed alongside Williams in the race to the No. 1 overall pick.
That thought has lost its luster, though, to the point where Maye could very well slip outside the top two.
Obviously, the Commanders are doing as much homework as possible before making their decision on the future of their franchise, so a meeting with Maye before his Pro Day is no surprise. We’ll find out soon enough what Washington decides with the draft’s first round taking place on Thursday, April 25.
