Jerrod Carmichael Has More to Say About His Beef with Dave Chappelle
With any art form, itās not unusual to see tension between the young guns and the old guard. As comedian Jerrod Carmichael will tell you, itās even harder when you come out as gay onstageāand the stand-up worldās elder generation is less than accepting. According to Carmichael, a comment from Dave Chappelle about his 2022 stand-up special, Rothaniel, continues to live with him. ā[Chappelle] referred to it as the bravest special for 1996,ā Carmichael says in Esquireās new digital cover story. āAnd itās like, thatās a funny enough line, whatever, but I wonder if he gets the irony that the fact that you are mocking it even then is why it was hard.ā
On Carmichaelās new HBO series, Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, the comedianās conflict with his own sexuality is on full display. In one particularly challenging scene, he even entertains his Christian mother with a prayer to ātake the desireā away. āI still think saying youāre gay is saying somethingās wrong with you,ā he adds in the cover story. āAnd so much of comedy is just gay jokes. As long as people continue to laugh at it and mock it, and as long as itās a punchline, itās going to be scary for somebody. Itās scary for me.ā
This wasnāt the first time that Carmichael and Chappelle commented on each otherās work. Back in 2022, Carmichael told The Hollywood Reporter that Chappelleās legacy is currently āa bunch of opinions on trans shit,ā which he called āan odd hill to die on.ā Clarifying his comments, he tells Esquire that Chappelle is ānot revealing anything personal about himself and heās removed from what heās talking about, and I think heās smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts.ā
According to Carmichael, Chappelle didnāt take the constructive criticism too well. āHe took it as āFuck Dave Chappelle,ā because heās an egomaniac,ā the comedian says. āHe wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some shit.ā It sounds like we shouldnāt expect that apology anytime soon.
