Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are Making New His-and-Hers Netflix Shows
Meghan Markle and Prince Harryâs post-royal content empire is growing. The two are developing a pair of nonfiction projects at Netflix, having signed an overall deal with the streamer in 2020 via their Archewell Productions banner, Deadline reports. Both projects are in the âearly stages of production,â per the outlet.
The first series, which is being curated and executive-produced by Meghan, will reportedly âcelebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship,â with Selena + Chefâs Leah Hariton working as showrunner and Michael Steed, who previously helmed episodes of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, serving as director. The announcement of Meghanâs series comes on the heels of news about her soon-to-launch lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard; the show will be produced by Sony Pictures Televisionâs Intellectual Property Corporation, which is responsible for programs like Huluâs DâAmelio Show and A&Eâs Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.
The second new show will chronicle the world of professional polo, with footage primarily shot at the US Open Polo Championship at the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida, according to Deadline. Executive-produced by both Prince Harry, an avid polo player, and Meghan, the series aims to âpull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level.â MiloĆĄ BalaÄ, a producer on FXâs docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, will serve as showrunner, with Boardwalk Pictures, the production company behind Netflixâs Chefâs Table and Sex, Love & Goop, producing.
Earlier this year, future plans for the Sussexesâ Netflix deal were teased by the streamerâs chief content officer, Bela Bajaria. âThey have a couple of unscripted things theyâre working on with [Netflix VP of nonfiction series] Brandon [Riegg],â Bajaria said, as reported by Hello! magazine. âAnd they actually have, like, a bunch of development; they have a movie in development, a [scripted] series that theyâre working on. So all very early development, with a movie, a TV show, and a couple of unscripted shows.â
The couple, who recently debuted a new website to accompany their preexisting websites for the Archewell Foundation and their production studio, have created multiple projects for Netflix. Live to Lead centered on disruptors like climate activist Greta Thunberg and feminist icon Gloria Steinem, while Heart of Invictus showed athletes training for Prince Harryâs Invictus Games at The Hague; they were released in December 2022 and August 2023, respectively. Then there was the bombshell Harry & Meghan docuseries, whose first part also debuted at the close of 2022, becoming Netflixâs most viewed documentary debut at that point.
