‘I’m devastated’

The Olympians: Ten extraordinary athletes preparing for Paris share their story

British long jumper Jazmin Sawyers has confirmed she will miss the Olympic Games in Paris later this year due to a ruptured Achilles on her take-off leg.

The 29-year-old was vying for a third Olympics appearance having also featured at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2020 event in Tokyo. She finished eighth in both appearances.

Sawyers said in an Instagram post she is “devastated” to not be able to compete in Paris this summer.

“It’s bad, but I am looking ahead to rehab, recovery and the future,” Sawyers said.

“Obviously I’m devastated. I really thought this was going to be my year.”

Sawyers has yet to medal for Team GB on the Olympic stage but established herself with a stunning 7m jump at the European Indoor Championships last year to claim her maiden major long jump title and break the British record.

Sawyers also picked up silver medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2016 European Championships.

The Olympic Games, which take place from July 26 to August 11, will be available to watch on discovery+.

discovery+ is the streaming home of the Olympic Games, and the only place you can watch every moment of Paris 2024 this summer
