Napoli vs Roma predictions
In the Europe-wide race to gain an additional Champions League place in next season’s expanded edition of the tournament, Italy leads the way.

Despite the fact that no Serie A side advanced to the last eight of this year’s Champions League, their clubs have amassed the most coefficient points across all three continental competitions this term.

Roma and Atalanta are through to the semi-finals of the Europa League, while Fiorentina will participate in the Europa Conference League semis. In total, five Italian teams reached the knockout phase of the three tournaments.

As such, Serie A will be granted an additional spot in the 2024/25 Champions League. That is good news for Roma.

The club from the capital occupy fifth spot in the current standings. They are four points behind fourth-placed Bologna, to whom Roma lost last weekend. That gap may be too large to make up with just four rounds of fixtures remaining, but fifth is now sufficient.

Roma still have work to do, though. They enter the weekend with a four-point advantage over Atalanta in sixth, but Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have a game in hand.

Those two teams will go head-to-head in a potentially decisive encounter on May 12, but Roma have a tricky couple of games before that: after this trip to Napoli, they host Juventus next weekend. On paper at least, Atalanta have the kinder run-in.

Napoli could also benefit from the expansion. Nine points adrift of Roma as things stand, the Champions League will surely be beyond them. But seventh is now good enough to book a spot in the Europa League, while eighth – their current position – brings with it a Europa Conference League berth.

Participating in Europe is important to Napoli, who won the UEFA Cup in 1989 during the era of Diego Maradona.

Inter may already be champions in Italy, but the battle for European football could go right down to the wire.

Napoli and Roma will lock horns in a crunch clash in Serie A at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Roma or draw – 10/11 (BoyleSports)
Last week, Roma confirmed that Daniele De Rossi will be their manager next season. Initially appointed on an interim basis, Jose Mourinho’s inexperienced successor has had a positive start to his life in the dugout.

A club legend who made 616 appearances for Roma as a player, De Rossi instantly had the backing of the supporters. But the former midfielder has shown real potential as a coach in recent months.

Had the season begun on the day De Rossi was appointed, Roma would be third right now. Only Inter and Bologna have amassed more points than the Giallorossi under their current boss.

Napoli are also under new management in the form of Francesco Calzona, who took over in February. But they have won only one of their last six games in Serie A, while also being knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona last month.

Napoli have only the 11th-best home record in the division this term. Like 10 out of 16 visitors before them, Roma can avoid defeat in Naples.

Both teams to score – 3/4 (bet365)
Roma have improved their attacking output under De Rossi. Inter are the only team in Serie A to have found the back of the net more often since his appointment in the middle of January.

Roma have drawn a blank in only one of their 15 league games in 2024. With Tammy Abraham and Paolo Dybala fit again, De Rossi has alternatives to Romelu Lukaku, who has scored once in his last seven matches.

Napoli have scored in 10 of their last 12 games in all competitions. They have had little trouble creating chances this term: only Inter and AC Milan, the top two, rank higher in the expected goals table.

With all that in mind, this bet represents excellent value in the latest edition of the Derby del Sole.

Tammy Abraham to score any time – 3/1 (bet365)
After a fantastic debut season in 2021/22, Abraham only scored nine times in 54 appearances last term. On the final weekend, he suffered a serious knee injury which kept him sidelined for 10 months.

The England international made his return in the derby against Lazio, entering the fray for the final 11 minutes.

He was handed his first start against Bologna last weekend, then played all 18 minutes in Thursday’s clash with Udinese (the original game was suspended after 72 minutes).

Abraham is yet to score since he returned from injury, but he will be desperate to do so before the end of the season.

De Rossi is likely to hand him another start here, even though the former Chelsea striker might not be ready to complete a full 90 minutes yet. This wager is good value.
