After meeting with free-agent wide receiver Zay Jones on Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys reportedly cleared room for his potential signing.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Cowboys released veteran wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January.

The Cowboys hosted Bryant for a workout in November following his reinstatement into the NFL and signed him to their practice squad. He was a part of the team’s practice squad cuts on Jan. 4 before Dallas re-added to the roster later in the month.

While Bryant never appeared in a game for the Cowboys, Peliserro added that “other teams are interested and expected to bring him in for a look” following his release from Dallas.

A fourth-round pick in 2014 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bryant played four seasons in the NFL and had 145 catches for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns along with a rushing touchdown in 44 career games. However, his career was derailed by multiple violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.

The Cowboys are hoping to add more firepower next to star receiver CeeDee Lamb. Jones spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars but was released at the end of April after the team selected LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. with the 23rd pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Jones recorded 116 catches for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Jags, including career highs of 82 receptions and 823 receiving yards in 2022. He was limited to nine games in 2023 due to a knee injury.

Time will tell if the Cowboys will be able to land Jones or another veteran receiver to pair with Lamb.
