RISE Mzansi is crying foul that its election campaign posters are removed.

The party said on Friday, 24 May, that it has become aware that this criminality happened in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Eastern Cape.

Rise Mzansi provincial convenor Pumla Ngesi claimed that the posters have been “systematically removed by opposing political parties”.

She said: “This action, not only undermines the democratic process but also violates established guidelines set by the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).

“The IEC has clear policies regarding the display and removal of campaign materials. According to these regulations, defacing, ripping off, or removal of election posters by unauthorised individuals or parties is a criminal offence and therefore strictly prohibited.”

Ngesi pointed out that the aim of the rules was to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, allowing all political entities to communicate their messages to the public without obstruction.

Ngesi said the removal of posters was an offence to their constitutional rights.

“Freedom of expression, including the right to disseminate political messages, is a cornerstone of our democracy. Deliberate removal of our campaign posters demonstrates a concerning level of intolerance and disrespect for these fundamental democratic principles, disrupting healthy political competition and infringing upon our right to a fair election,” she said.

Doron Benjamin Locketz appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrates Court on Friday last week, on charges of theft after a video of him removing ANC posters went viral.

The 71-year-old from Parkhurst, Joburg, was granted R1 000 bail.

Rise Mzansi condemned the removal of its posters and called it “acts of sabotage”.

Ngesi urged all parties to adhere to the IEC’s guidelines and respect our constitutional rights.

“Deliberate targeting of our campaign materials is not just a violation of electoral regulations but an attack on the democratic values that underpin our society. Such actions disrupt the spirit of healthy political competition,” she said.

She urged the IEC to enforce its policies and hold those responsible for the crime accountable.
