Akyem Asuom chiefs demand removal of police commander over galamsey
The chiefs of Akyem Asuom in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region have demanded the immediate removal of the Police Commander, Superintendent Stephen Abanga.
This is due to his alleged involvement in illegal activities.
According to the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, Superintendent Abanga conducts himself in an unprofessional manner and disrespects traditional leaders.
He accused the commander of participating in illegal mining activities, effecting illegal arrests and mediating disputes inappropriately.
The Krontihene, on behalf of the other chiefs, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately replace the commander.

Meanwhile, tension is mounting in the community as angry residents thronged the streets to support their chiefs’ demands.
Superintendent Abanga Stephen is yet to respond to the allegations.
In March 2023, the chiefs of Akyem Kade also called on the IGP to deal with their district police commander over his involvement in galamsey.
Their call came after concerns raised by some soldiers and allegations that Chief Superintendent Agyenim Boateng claimed ownership of land used by some illegal miners.
They, therefore, demanded immediate intervention from the IGP as they were not ready to entertain the commander in the area.
