Having taken charge of the club in December 2021, Slot guided the Dutch side to the Eredivisie title in 2023, before winning the Dutch Cup last term.

He also led the club to the Europa League final in his first season and the 45-year-old has built a reputation for achieving success while also playing a high-octane, attack-minded brand of football.

Van Gaal, who managed Manchester United between 2014 and 2016, knows what the Premier League is all about and gave his backing to his Dutch compatriot.

“So he (Slot) is the successor and it’s always more difficult but he is a good technical coach.

“I think at the moment he’s the best technical coach from the Netherlands. He was at that time free so I think Liverpool have made a very good choice.”

Slot officially took charge of the Reds on June 1 and will be getting his feet under the table before beginning his first campaign at the club in August.

Van Gaal replaced David Moyes as Red Devils boss in the summer of 2014 having earlier guided the Netherlands to a third-placed finish at the World Cup in Brazil.

His two-year spell at Old Trafford had some turbulence with many questions surrounding his future at the club overshadowing his second season at the club.

However, his final match in charge of Man United saw them beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.
