‘Mirka and I Cried a lot..I Cried at Least Six Times’ – Roger Federer Shares True Feelings About His Documentary

Seeing through the lens of the Swiss Maestro! ‘FEDERER: Final Twelve Days‘ is not just a documentary, but a glimpse of all the emotions that the players and their families go through during retirement. Roger Federer played his final professional match in September 2022. This documentary captures the final twelve days leading to his last match as a professional player. It features reactions from his family, team, and as well as his arch-rivals. Roger Federer had earlier revealed he had “cried six times” watching this documentary, but do you know his wife, Mirka Federer was also moved to tears after watching this emotional retirement documentary of her husband?

Twelve Final Days will be streamed on Prime Video on June 20. However, during a recent interview with ‘Gazzetta‘, Roger Federer was asked whether his family had seen the documentary yet. He revealed that his children have not yet watched it but Federer and with his wife Mirka got the chance to watch it at the screening with director Asif Kapadia and co-director, Joe Sabia.

Federer revealed, “Mirka and I cried a lot: it was incredible to relive those moments. It happened two months ago in Zurich when there was a first screening of the film, which was 90 percent ready. I cried at least six times; career is truly over.” The film footage however was never meant to be public, it was initially meant for his friends and family. But when the Swiss maestro watched it, he wanted fans to witness these raw emotions and that’s what he thinks the “beauty of this film.”

Speaking more on the documentary Federer once revealed, “It’s supposed to be a feel-good film. But also [it’s about] the suffering and the vulnerability that goes into the retirement. As well as the happiness and the gratitude you have. So I think there’s so much to it. Some parts will resonate probably with a lot of people.” He didn’t want to hide anything from his fans. Federer tried to show them the struggles the players had to go through during retirement.

What was the most emotional moment for Roger Federer in this iconic documentary?Describing a line from this documentary, Asif Kapadia said, “One of my favorite lines in the film is his coach says, athletes die twice. We are witnessing his death, but this guy is also rich and healthy.” He wanted to portray the emotions attached to this film through his words. “They’re all crying. They all have a breakdown, but they’re gonna get on with their lives. [Federer] even says, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do now, what comes next?’ It’s really emotional,” Kapadia said in an interview. When Roger Federer told his wife about his retirement, she was in tears. 

Her sufferings were almost as equal to Roger Federer’s. However, reflecting on the most emotional moment in this documentary, Roger Federer said, “There is a very emotional moment in which she says how meaningful he has been to her and how much she has always loved watching me play. That is one of the most emotional moments.
