Scotland head into their final match of the Euro 2024 group stage with their fate in their own hands following their 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Wednesday night, in a strong recovery from their demoralising 5-1 defeat to Germany on the opening night.

Four points will almost certainly be enough for third placed finishers in the group stage to secure qualification into the knockout round, a tally that Steve Clarke’s side will reach if they beat a Hungary side who have lost both of their opening two matches so far.

The mood has been lifted in the Scottish camp following their draw with the Swiss in Cologne, which has left the door open for a victory which would result in their qualification into the knockout stage of a major competition for the first time in their history.

The Tartan Army have still only won one of their last 11 matches in all competitions, which came in a narrow win over Gibraltar earlier this month, will take a huge amount of optimism from their performance on Wednesday into Sunday night’s bout.

Hungary travel to Stuttgart knowing they must win and other results must also go their way if they are to stand any chance of reaching the knockout stages of a major competition for just the second time since 1986.

Marco Rossi’s side have lost both of their opening two matches, against Switzerland and Germany, ahead of this, their third and final match of the group stage, and, like Scotland, will know that only a win will do for them.

The Magyars’ only chance of qualification is as one of the four best third placed teams, and with their only being able to reach three points, their goal difference, which currently stands at -4, could be vital for them, so will need to improve it on Sunday to give them the best chance of reaching the last 16.

Hungary have now lost three of their last four matches 14 matches without defeat, but do have a narrow winning record against Scotland, leading 4-3 in wins from their 9 previous meetings.

The Scots have however won two of their last three matches against Hungary, the most recent meeting coming in a friendly in Budapest in which Scotland recorded a 1-0 win.
