‘Freaky Friday 2’: Everything We Know About the Sequel Starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis
Everyone say thank you to Jamie Lee Curtis, who has been pushing for a Freaky Friday sequel harder than anyone else for years.
Back in October 2022, Curtis revealed she had pitched her own premise for Freaky Friday 2, hoping to play a “sexy grandma” alongside OG costar Lindsay Lohan. “Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places, so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” Curtis said during an appearance on The View. “I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today’s world.”
Lohan later confirmed that Curtis had reached out to her about the idea while she was filming another project. “Jamie Lee Curtis writes you, and you just get excited and distracted immediately, so I had to bring myself back down to earth,” Lohan told Jimmy Fallon. “And then she said, ‘Freaky Friday 2,’ and I got more excited.”
Two years later, Freaky Friday 2 is officially in the works. On March 29, 2024, Curtis teased the news by reposting a selfie from her November 2023 reunion with Lohan. “DUH! FFDEUX,” she captioned her new post, tagging Disney and Disney Plus. The media company then confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the sequel is in the works. Here’s everything we know.
Who is involved?Per THR, Nisha Ganatra (Welcome to Chippendales) has been tapped to direct the project, and Curtis and Lohan are on board to reprise their roles from the 2003 body-switching comedy. In the original film, rebellious teen Anna Coleman (Lohan) swaps bodies with her straight-laced mom, Tessa Coleman (Curtis). And let’s just say, watching Curtis swoon over motorcycle-riding Chad Michael Murray is reason enough to give the film a rewatch.
Besides her selfie with Lohan, Curtis also shared a photo with Ganatra and Dollface writer Jordan Weiss, captioned “Girl power! We are just missing a hot redhead and the team would be complete.”
Lindsay responded to the callout by sharing the photo on her Instagram Stories, writing, “Well, ok mom! 🙈🥰🎸🎤”
Which members of the original cast will return? In addition to Lohan and Curtis, several members of the original cast are set to return for the sequel, including Mark Harmon (Ryan), Chad Michael Murray (Jake), Haley Hudson (Peg), Christina Vidal (Maddie), Stephen Tobowlosky (Mr. Bates), Rosalind Chao (Pei Pei), and Lucille Soong (Pei Pei’s mischievous mother).
Below, we’ve compiled a helpful guide to the returning actors then versus now, just in case you need a reminder of who’s who.

Who are the new members of the cast?Joining Freaky Friday 2 are some familiar faces, including Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) and Manny Jacinto (Top Gun: Maverick, The Good Place). Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters will round out the newcomers (that we know of so far). The new cast’s roles have yet to be revealed.
When will Freaky Friday 2 be released?Disney confirmed on June 24 that filming on the project has begun, and the film will be released in 2025! The Disney Studios Instagram account shared a photo of the two leads, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, holding hands outside of their trailers on the set of Freaky Friday 2. Notably, Curtis sits in front of Lohan’s trailer, and vice versa. Clever.
“The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” reads the caption. “The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”
It’s unclear if the two actors are already in costume in the shot, or if that’s just how they arrived to set; however, they’re definitely acting as their body-swapped characters in the pic. Curtis holds her hands up in the “rock on” symbol—so Anna Coleman–coded—while Lohan sits with her legs crossed and her head cocked to the side, a perfect Tessa Coleman, Licensed Social Worker, pose.
Fans are already freaking out in the comments: “This is the best day of my life,” writes one follower. Adds another, “OMG amazing news.”
What’s the plot?According to a casting call shared by the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), Curtis will be getting her wish about grandchildren. In the film, Anna Coleman (Lohan) has a 14-year-old daughter, Harper, who will be trying to stop a wedding between her “longtime single mom” and “British restaurateur Eric Davies.”
The description continued, “If that wasn’t bad enough, Eric comes with his own 14-year-old daughter, sharp-tongued Lily. Harper and Lily do not see eye to eye. Harper would like to see things go her way and use her intelligence to stop this marriage from ever happening.”
