By Martin Graham | 2nd Jul 2024Cristiano Ronaldo admitted that he felt he let Portugal down during their Euro 2024 last 16 clash with Slovenia. The Selecao narrowly advanced to the quarter-finals after a goalless draw over 120 minutes, eventually triumphing 3-0 in a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa emerged as Portugalā€™s hero by saving all three of Sloveniaā€™s penalty attempts.

Despite the victory, Ronaldo had a chance to secure the win in extra time when Portugal were awarded a penalty. However, Atletico Madridā€™s Jan Oblak managed to tip Ronaldoā€™s shot onto the post, leading to tears for the 39-year-old forward. Ronaldo redeemed himself by scoring Portugalā€™s first penalty in the shootout, with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also converting their spot-kicks to ensure Roberto Martinezā€™s side advanced.

Ronaldoā€™s emotional reactionSpeaking to reporters after the match, a visibly emotional Ronaldo, who broke down in tears after Oblakā€™s save, shared his thoughts on the intense evening in Frankfurt. ā€œInitially, I was heartbroken, but now I am elated,ā€ he admitted. ā€œThis is the nature of football. It takes you from extreme lows to extreme highs.ā€

Ronaldo continued, ā€œWe had a chance to take the lead, and I missed it. Oblak made a great save. I need to review the footage to see if I struck it correctly. Iā€™m filled with mixed emotions ā€“ both sadness and joy. Itā€™s crucial to celebrate our progress. Weā€™re performing excellently and committed to going all the way.ā€

He emphasized, ā€œWe created more opportunities and deserved to advance.ā€
