Just over a month ago, the coach was trailblazing in his maiden season as a head coach, leading the club to the African Football League and DStv Premiership titles.

But Mokwena’s time at Sundowns appears to be nearing its end.

This is after it was revealed that he enjoyed an estranged relationship with the club’s Sporting Director Flemming Berg, while the Siya crew revealed that there was dissatisfaction with the club’s playing style and their shortcomings in the CAF Champions League.

Now, the latest news reaching the Siya crew’s desk is that Patrice Carteron, the former Al Ahly and Zamalek man is the coach being sounded out as the potential replacement for Mokwena.

Vastly experienced, the Frenchman has plied his trade in Europe, Africa and the Gulf region with a number of clubs.

You’d have to go back 12 years to the last time Sundowns had a European coach, with Dutchman Johan Neeskens the last foreign coach to occupy the club’s dugout.

Since then, Pitso Mosimane, Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi have held down the fort respectively.
