Snl24 | Orebonye: I Will Join Chiefs If The Money Is Good

Kaizer Chiefs were already linked to Tumisang “Benteke” Orebonye, a striker currently playing for AS FAR Rabat, a team that was under the guidance of incoming Amakhosi coach, Nasreddine Nabi.

Now, Orebonye, a Botswana international, has expressed his openness to joining Chiefs, provided the financial terms meet his expectations. In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma from his base in Morocco, Orebonye discussed the potential move, emphasizing the importance of the financial package in his decision.

“Yeah, there have been those reports about me moving to Chiefs in South Africa and I don’t have a problem with that. But there has been no offer at the moment. If the offer can be good I don’t see any problem why I can’t join Chiefs. Yes, I know the coach and I know the team since I am from Botswana. But what is important is the money. If the money is good I can move to Chiefs,” Orebonye told the Siya crew.

At 28 years of age, Orebonye is looking at his future pragmatically, aiming to secure a contract that will provide financial stability. 

“I am 28-years-old now and I don’t want to play until I am 40 years just because I didn’t make enough money now. In a few years time when I retire I should invest they money in my own things so moving to South Africa would not be a problem. But as I have said, it has to be the right offer because I still have a valid contract here in Morocco.

“I signed a two and half year contract when I joined from Algeria and it’s ending in June 2026. So, only a good offer will move me. Above all, I will be playing in the CAF Champions League next season and the offer has to be better than that for me to be attracted. But in football anything is possible and I can still move to Chiefs,” Orebonye told Soccer Laduma.

Orebonye also highlighted the potential lifestyle changes that a move to South Africa could entail, given the proximity to his home country, Botswana.

“The disadvantage is that lifestyle is South Africa and Botswana is the same and it’s very close to home. Which means every time I am bored at the club or in South Africa I would be wanting to go home. I don’t want that to happen. But as I have said, if the money is good I would consider it. It’s something I am looking at and I can’t count it out completely at this stage,” he added.

Orebonye’s commitments in Morocco include participating in the CAF Champions League next season, the most prestigious African competition, which Amakhosi are not participating in, and that adds another layer of consideration to any potential move.

As pre-season approaches, with Orebonye scheduled to return to Morocco by July 15th, the situation remains fluid. Chiefs and any potential suitors will need to present an offer that not only compensates AS FAR Rabat adequately but also aligns with Orebonye’s personal and professional aspirations. As discussions potentially progress, the football community will be watching closely to see if a transfer materialises.
