2024 Emmy Nominations: Breaking Down the Top Nominees

Television’s biggest night is nearly here.  

After all, the 2024 Emmy nominations have just been announced, and the anticipation will only continue to build until the ceremony airs live Sept. 15 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. 

Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph and Veep alum Tony Hale announced every nominee for the small screen’s biggest honor in a livestream on July 17—and their list proves the 76th annual Emmy Awards could be the most competitive yet. 

Sofia Vergara made history with her nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology series for Griselda. While the 52-year-old already had four nominations under her belt for her performance in Modern Family, she is the first Latina to ever be nominated for her category. 

“Griselda was my first dramatic role ever, and it took us 15 years to bring her to life,” the America’s Got Talent host said in a statement. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who was a part of this series.”

And in addition to thanking her collaborators including director Andres Baiz and her costar Alberto Guerra, she congratulated her fellow nominees Jodie Foster (True Detective), Brie Larson (Lessons in Chemistry), Juno Temple (Fargo) and Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans).

“I never dreamed that after Modern Family I would be able to work on something as special as Griselda,” Sofia continued. “I’m honored to be recognized alongside Jodie, Brie, Juno, and Naomi, incredible women who gave us incredible TV this year.”

As for the frontrunners this year? The Bear set a record for the most nominations for a comedy series with 23 nods, beating out 30 Rock’s 2009 feat of 22. Only Murders in the Building followed closely behind with 21 nods, while Abbott Elementary took eight total.

As for dramas, Shogun leads with 25 nominations—the most nods overall. The Crown and The Gilded Age also recieved considerable honors with 18 nominations and six nominations, respectively. After the 2023 ceremony was somewhat swept by Succession and its cast—the show’s wins included Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing, and individual trophies for Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew MacFayden—the ball could be in anyone’s court this year where drama series are concerned.

As for other notable nominations heading into the 2024 Emmys, Ayo Edebiri, who took home her first trophy at last year’s ceremony nabbed her second nod for The Bear this year. Meanwhile, 36 performers received their first nomination this year, including new Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her guest performance in Only Murders in the Building, Ryan Gosling for his April hosting gig on Saturday Night Live and Richard Gadd, who scored his first two for his buzzy semi-autobiographical horror thriller Baby Reindeer. 

But as the saying goes, it’s simply an honor just to be nominated. Keep reading to see how all the stars are celebrating the prestigious accolade.

Jamie Lee Curtis, The Bear

“A merry morning indeed,” Jamie wrote in a July 17 Instagram post. “The team @thebearfx from words to sounds and everything visually in between are represented so beautifully with their record 23 @televisionacad nominations. The show is singular and it’s beauty and power and truth and I’m honored to be a member of the creative family.”

Matthew Broderick, Only Murders in the Building

“I was lucky and delighted to have a very good part on an extremely terrific show,” Matthew—who was nominated for his guest appearance—said. “I got to work with some old friends and make some new ones, too. It’s very nice to get home from work with your face hurting from laughing. Thank you to everyone at Only Murders In The Building and especially to John Hoffman and my old dear friend Martin Short, you made me feel so welcome. Thanks to the Television Academy for this. I’m deeply honored and over the moon happy.”

Robert Downey Jr., The Sympathizer

“I share this nomination with the incomparable Director Park [Chan-wook], Hoa Xuande, Sandra Oh and my remarkably talented Vietnamese cast mates,” RDJ wrote. “It was a privilege to participate in this extraordinary, cross-cultural project. I thank the Television Academy for acknowledging my five small parts within The Sympathizer’s larger whole.”

Laura Dern, Palm Royale

Laura Dern, who starred and executive produced the AppleTV+series, issued a statement on behalf of herself and fellow producer Jayme Lemons. 

“Jayme and I are overjoyed by the Television Academy’s recognition of Palm Royale in so many important categories,” Laura wrote. “We are immensely grateful to our Apple TV+ family and honored to be included in such esteemed company with our fellow nominees.”

Lamorne Morris, Fargo

“Thank you to the Television Academy for finally recognizing all my hard work on New Girl!” Lamorne joked in a statement. “Although I believe it’s a lock, I do see I’m nominated alongside Robert Downey Jr. who stole my role in Tropic Thunder. My fellow nominees and I won’t let this slide.This is a great honor, and I couldn’t be more excited! Truly blessed to work with such a talented cast and crew!”

The first time Emmy nominee also added a specific shoutout to writer and director Noah Hawley

“Special thank you Noah for the opportunity and trusting me to bring Witt Farr to life!” Lamorne added. “Go Fargo!”

Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge

“I am so touched by this nomination,” Lily—who also recieved her first Oscar nomination in 2024—said. “I wholeheartedly share the honor with the stellar cast of Under the Bridge, who brought such deep compassion and unmatched talent to telling Reena Virk’s story. Every beating heart on screen gave so much of themselves to honor her legacy.”

Lily finished by thanking her costars Vritika Gupta, Archie Panjabi and Riley Keough. 

“I’d especially like to thank Vritika, Archie and Riley, I am so inspired by you all,” she added. “Thank you to Quinn Shephard, Samir Mehta, Liz Tigelaar, Stacey Silverman, Gina Gammell and Riley Keough for bringing this story to light and being champions of radical empathy. I’m forever grateful to have been brought along for the journey.”

Donald Glover & Francesca Sloane, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

“What is happening!” The show’s creators wrote. “Thank you to the Television Academy! We really weren’t expecting this, but damn did we put in some work—it’s not every day you get to make something with a bunch of your best friends and it’s definitely not every day that it then receives love this way.”

The duo did not shy away from giving everyone who brought the show to life their flowers, too—including Donald’s costar Maya Erskine.

Liza Colón-Zaya, The Bear

Thank you so much for all the love, all the fans and viewers, and the Television Academy for the showing of The Bear,” Liza said in an Instagram video shared July 17. “I did not expect this. This is why my video is so late. 23 Emmy nominations. Mind blowing. Shoutout to all of my cast members who have also been recognized.”

Liza also congratulated her fellow cast members—including fellow nominees Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss Bach-Rach—and the show’s creator Chris Storer.

Jessica Gunning, Baby Reindeer

“I mean, overwhelmed doesn’t really cover it,” Jennifer—who starred alongside Richard Gadd in the Netflix series—wrote. “Astonished might be more apt! Juno Temple, Fargo

“This means the world,” Juno wrote. “I’m so deeply grateful to FX, the whole cast and our amazing crew—working on  was the most extraordinary, special experience. Noah Hawley is a goddamn genius.”

Naturally, Juno nodded to her fellow castmates Lamonre Morris and Jon Hamm.

Aja Naomi King, Lessons in Chemistry

Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer

“I couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams when I was writing this show in my tiny flat during Covid that it would go on to have 11 Emmy nominations,” Richard, who wrote and starred in the series, said in a statement. “I am so grateful to the academy for recognising this show. You have made a little boy from a tiny Scottish town‘s dreams come true and I am crying, with happiness, even as I write this. I would like to extend my thanks to Netflix, Clerkenwell, and all the wonderful cast and crew who worked on this show, as well as my team who are quite simply the greatest.”

The comedian, who based the show somewhat on his own life, finished by thanking the charitable organizations who supported him during a rough time.

“I would also like to thank We Are Survivors for all their help in the charities space, as well as the Suzy Lamplugh Trust,” he added. “Ten years ago I was down and out. I hope this is a reminder for anyone going through a hard time right now to keep going. There is light even in the darkest of rooms. Fight hard and you will find it.”

Nava Mau, Baby Reindeer

“I am at a complete loss for words,” the actress wrote. “This morning is such an emotional rollercoaster filled with tears of joy over this recognition of my work, and for my humanity as a trans Latina woman.”

Nava, who made history as the first Latina transgender actress to be nominated in her category, also included a note on what it means to her. 

“Today is an affirmation of my existence and my journey as a working actor,” she continued. “It is a dream come true and I am so humbled and deeply grateful for this nomination. Most importantly, I am thankful to my peers for not only bestowing me with this nomination, but celebrating this groundbreaking moment for the Trans community at large. I extend my endless gratitude and congratulations to Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, and my entire Baby Reindeer family. This has been the ride of a lifetime, and I am so deeply moved to be sharing this with all of you. Mil gracias y mucho amor a mi familia en México y San Antonio!”

Carrie Coon, The Gilded Age

“Today is especially gratifying because The Gilded Age returned to production last week for a season three that exists only because so many people watch and love the show,” Carrie said. “I want to thank our champions at HBO for giving us another round.”

She, of course, went on to note her castmates and crew who made her performance possible—including her fellow nominee Christine Baranski.

 “It was such a nice surprise when I heard this morning,” Matt wrote, noting his husband Simon Halls broke the news to him. “I didn’t know today was the day of the nominations. The fact that two out actors in a love story were recognized in this way is profoundly moving to me.”

Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country

Mark Duplass, The Morning Show

The first people Mark would like to thank? Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. 

“I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside leads Jen and Reese, who have blazed such a powerful trail for actors on this show,” he wrote. “It’s a gift to get to be a part of such a talented ensemble and waking up today to see not only 16 nominations, but seven of them from the supporting cast alone was truly heartwarming.”

Of course, Mark also went on to congratulate his other cast members, too.

In particular, seeing the acknowledgement for gifted and hardworking actors like Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and the legendary Holland Taylor is the most thrilling part of all of this.
