Roush Will Give Your New Ford Mustang 810bhp

Like the new Ford Mustang GT, but think its 448bhp is a bit… weak? Well, you could move to America (unless you already live there), where looser emissions rules mean the 5.0-litre V8 instead produces 480bhp.

But if you’re a true power junky, someone who sneers at anything with a bhp figure starting with a number lower than five, then as always, the aftermarket has come to the rescue. In this case, it’s long-established Ford tuner Roush Performance that’s come up with the goods: a supercharger kit for the new Mustang that lifts power to supercar levels.

The company will fit a Magnuson supercharger which, depending on the tuning kit applied, will take power as high as 810bhp, and lift torque as high as 630lb ft. Obviously, you can’t generally supercharge a factory-spec car to that level and call it a day. Well, you can, but you’ll soon end up with a very expensive paperweight.

To avoid that, Roush has done plenty of other things to the engine. It gets a new dual throttle body design, not one but two intercoolers, higher-capacity fuel injectors, new anodised fuel lines and something called a ‘Monstrous Full Face Low Temp Radiator’. Hell yes.

‘But wait’, we hear you yell. ‘The new Ford Mustang GTD has more than 800bhp, too!’ Yes, it does. But the GTD, costs north of £300,000. This kit, meanwhile, costs £9995 (around £7700), plus a base Mustang GT – and that’s for the Launch Edition, which features company founder Jack Roush’s signature engraved into the cam covers. Safe to assume that cheaper versions are on the way later.

Granted, it won’t get you the GTD’s swollen carbon fibre bodywork, active aero, trick inboard suspension… we could go on. But if your priority is simply big power from a Mustang then, as always, you have options aplenty – there’s the new Shelby Super Snake, for one.
