THE family of Luluvo Ngqaza who allegedly moered his grandmother last month has come out guns blazing to defend him.

They said gogo exaggerated everything when she testified against the 19-year-old in court to make him look bad, “but he is a good kid”.

Among the things that gogo Sindiwe Ngqaza (82) said was that Luluvo must not get bail as he will kill her. She also alleged that he was taking drugs and steals her money regularly.

But family member, Phathiswa Ngqaza (36) said she is the one who runs gogo’s errands and she has never heard her complain about stolen money.

“Gogo keeps her keys on her all the time and her money is always locked in her bedroom. We were shocked when she told the court that Luluvo was stealing her money.

“I do everything for her. I buy groceries, pay her funeral policies and all other errands. I give her the change and she has never told us that her money was stolen. We all heard that in court,” said Phathiswa.

Another family member, Liyema Mathanda (34), who lives in gogo’s backyard, said Luluvo is a good kid. “We don’t condone what he did to makhulu, but he did that out of anger because makhulu started with him,” said Liyema.

Asked what caused the fight between gogo Sindiwe and Luluvo, Liyema said the issue was about meat.

She said:

“He took four pieces of meat from the pot, but makhulu didn’t want him to do that. She asked why he had taken four pieces instead of two, but Luvo refused to return some meat, saying he had taken some for his cousin who was not home at the time.”

She said the disagreement became physical, which saw Luluvo beating up gogo.

“We are surprised by what makhulu was saying. Luvo is not a bad kid the way she painted him. He has never taken even R2 from makhulu. I was surprised,” said Liyema, adding that she only knew about the beating when the video went viral.

EFF regional secretary, Banzi Dambuza condemned the family, saying he suspected that more family members abused the gogo.

He said when gogo Sindiwe testified on Friday, 12 July, some family members in the benches were whispering to each other, saying she was lying.

“We will protect makhulu by any means necessary,” said Dambuza.

Luluvo was granted bail on Monday, 15 July and will return to court in September.
