Manqoba Mngqithi has not completely finalised his contract, but the Mamelodi Sundowns mentor has provided an update on what’s happening regarding a new deal with the Tshwane giants.

Mngqithi’s contract with Sundowns expired at the end of last season and his agent Mike Makaab has spoken extensively on the matters over the last few months, revealing that there is a contract in place for the coach, though nothing has been finalised as yet.

There is an expectation that everything will be finalised for the coach in the near future, with a long-term deal set to be announced by the club.

Mngqithi has taken over the reigns since the departure of Rulani Mokwena and he will be on the bench for the first time as sole head coach of Sundowns when they take on Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals on Sunday.

“What I can promise you is that almost everything is done. It’s probably left with one or two things, but the contract is already there, probably one or two signatures, but the contract is there,” Mngqithi said.

Mngqithi, who has Steve Komphela and Romain Folz added to the technical team, will be looking to get his tenure off to a good start by progressing to the semi-finals of the MTN8.

Sundowns lost out in the final to Orlando Pirates last season and are determined to go one further to start the season with silverware to display in the cabinet. City, though, will not be an easy test to overcome.

“It’s exciting to play a cup match, regardless of who you are playing with. It’s the time to check exactly where your team is. It’s always sad when it’s a cup match because there is no room for error in a cup match. I think the team has prepared quite well.”
