THE Enoch Mgijima Municipality had nine essential service vehicles attached by the sheriff of the court after a labour dispute with its workers.

The attachment comes as the municipality faces electricity problems, with constant outages affecting Komani town and its Mlungisi and Ezibeleni townships.

On Tuesday, 6 August the sheriff went to the municipality’s technical services offices and attached the nine vehicles.

They referred all comments to the municipality.

This has caused an outcry on social media, with residents calling for the municipality to be dissolved.

Municipality spokesman Lonwabo Kowa said they are promptly addressing the recent attachment of the assets to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to residents.

“Nine essential municipal vehicles were temporarily removed from our offices, briefly affecting our electricity service operations. The attachment stems from a labour dispute involving six former employees. One managerial staff member was dismissed for fraud,” Kodwa said.

“The case is currently under review, with a potential settlement of two months’ salary. Five other employees were initially dismissed for misconduct but won their case on review.”

Kowa said they have initiated necessary payments to resolve the matter swiftly.

“All attached vehicles are expected to be returned promptly to minimise disruption to essential services.”

He said the incident won’t deter efforts to combat fraud and corruption in the municipality.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of conduct among our staff. Appropriate action will be taken against any employee found violating our code of conduct or engaging in fraudulent activities.”

Kowa assured residents that they are working to ensure the temporary setback doesn’t impact service delivery.

“Our teams are implementing contingency measures to maintain essential services during this period.

“The municipality values the public’s understanding during this challenging period. We’re dedicated to upholding transparency, accountability and consistently enhancing our services for the community,” Kowa said.

He stated that the municipality is committed to uncovering fraud, corruption and addressing any misconduct or substandard performance.
