Brandon Aiyuk’s time with the San Francisco 49ers might not come to an end despite his trade request.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Friday that Aiyuk had a sit-down meeting with head coach Kyle Shanahan and others and “some open and candid thoughts were expressed.” Schultz also reported that the two sides have restarted negotiations for a long-term deal and there is “optimism” he could stay with the 49ers.

Schultz noted that the situation is still “very fluid.”

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also reported that several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, are still in the mix for a trade, but Aiyuk’s return to San Francisco “appears increasingly possible.”

After months of speculation, sporadic negotiations and recent trade talks, the #49ers are pushing to get a deal done that keeps Brandon Aiyuk in San Francisco for the long haul.

Jonathan Jones @jjones9As the Aiyuk Turns: There is some optimism in SF that the receiver could stay with the Niners, source says. Another source says “no one is out and no one is in.” Fluid situation remains fluid

Aiyuk and the 49ers have been in trade disputes for most of the offseason, and he officially requested a trade in July. If either a trade or restructured contract isn’t the answer, Aiyuk will play on the final year of his rookie deal and earn $14.124 million.

Earlier this week, NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco reported that San Francisco had the framework for deals that would send Aiyuk to either the New England Patriots or Cleveland Browns. Since then, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots were no longer interested in pursuing Aiyuk in a trade, meaning the 49ers trade partners might be limited.

But if San Francisco can figure out a deal that is appealing to Aiyuk, it might not have to worry about finding a trade and can instead hold onto its young star. That would likely be the ideal situation for both parties considering the success they enjoyed last season.

Aiyuk had the best year of his career in 2023, recording 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while helping lead the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance. That standout season warrants a big contract, and it seems he could get it with his current team.
