Man United agree new contract with key player

Manchester United missed the chance to lift the first trophy of the new campaign as they were beaten by rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday.

In a game of few chances, Alejandro Garnacho put the Red Devils ahead late on and looked to have secured the trophy for Erik ten Hag’s side.

City midfielder Bernardo Silva then headed home to even things up, sending the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Silva missed his spot-kick to give United the advantage, but Jadon Sancho also then failed to convert.

Veteran centre-back Jonny Evans then stepped up and saw his kick go high over the crossbar, giving Manuel Akanji the chance to win the tie for the Citizens – which he duly took.

Off the pitch, though, it appears that there is some good news on the way for United and Ten Hag.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Manchester club have agreed a new long-term deal with midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes could soon follow Ten Hag in signing a new contract with Man United

The Portugal international has been arguably the Red Devils’ most important players over the past few seasons, and Romano claims that the club have now reached an agreement over a new three-year-deal, which will also include the option for a further 12 months.

It is claimed that the new deal will make Fernandes, 29, one of the club’s highest earners.

Fernandes joined United from Portuguese side Sporting CP in January 2020 and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s best players.

The midfielder has made a total of 233 appearances for his current side across all competitions, scoring 79 times and providing 66 assists.

He lifted his first trophy in England at the end of last season, when United beat City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The player’s current contract was set to expire in 2026.
