RESIDENTS from Kwa Mhongqo in Kraaifontein, Cape Town said that the dam next to their kasi is like a mortuary to them.
Almost every month, abahlali are asked to identify a body floating in the dam.
The latest incident happened on Wednesday, 21 August, when residents were told to go to the dam as another body was floating.
A resident told Daily Sun that on 28 July, another body was found in the same dam. Residents said most of the victims found in the dam are not from their area, and they suspect that people are being killed elsewhere and dumped in the dam.
Community leader Mandisa Maneli (61) said she was called to the scene by a woman who works as an EPWP cleaner. The women were cleaning and had just put some rubbish in a container close to the dam when they made the shocking discovery.

āI called over leaders and community members who were around, and we saw a person floating in the dam. We then called the cops to the scene. We have been discovering dead people in this dam, and most of these people are not from our area. People kill a person somewhere else and dump them in the dam,ā she said.
Maneli believes that people take advantage of the secluded area on a farm close to their kasi to dump dead bodies in the dam.Ā
Another resident, Ludwe Mathetha, said: āThis dam is like a mortuary. Almost every month, abahlali must go and identify a body. Killers have found an easy spot to throw dead people to hide them.
“I’ve been living in Kraaifontein for the past three years, but I have lost count of the bodies that have been found in this dam. Some of them are badly injured, while others are found in a decomposing state.āĀ
Police spokesman Anelisiwe Manyana said cops have opened an inquest case.
“Kraaifontein police registered an inquest docket for investigation following the discovery of the body of an unidentified man on Wednesday, 21 August 2024, at about 9.20am at the corner of Botfontein and Maroela Road, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein.
“A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. Anyone with information regarding this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Manyana.
