Fear of water quality Seine prompts World Triathlon to change schedule Paralympic Triathlons already

For a while there were high hopes that the triathlons at the Paralympics would run a bit more normally than at the Olympics two weeks ago – in which the men’s race was postponed by a day because of the Seine’s poor water quality – but nothing could be further from the truth: the schedule of the Paralympic Triathlons has already been changed, according to a report from World Triathlon.

The Paralympic Triathlons were scheduled to take place over two days: on Sunday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 2, Para-athletes would race for their most important life in a 4-year cyclus. However, because bad weather is expected in Paris – including rainfall – it has been decided that all triathlons will now take place on Sunday, September 1. When it rains in Paris, the sewers of the city overflow into the Seine, deteriorating the water quality of the world-famous river where normal swimming has not been possible for over a hundred years; hence the decision has now been made to hold the races as early as possible.

During the Olympics, many athletes fell ill because of the water in the Seine.
