Dune: Awakening’s Xbox Series S Port Will Be ‘A Challenge’, Says Funcom

But it’s very confident in the final product

From what we’ve seen of it so far, Dune: Awakening is looking really good, with the team recently locking in a PC launch window of early 2025. While an Xbox version is in the plans for shortly afterwards, it seems that the team at Funcom has some work to do to get it running well – especially on Xbox Series S.

In a recent interview from Gamescom 2024 (thanks, VG247), Funcom’s Scott Junior discussed the development of Dune: Awakening, going on to say that making the game for Xbox Series S “is a challenge”.

“So, it’s one of the reasons we’re coming out on PC first. There’s a lot of optimisations we need to do before we release on the Xbox. But yeah, Xbox Series S is a challenge.”

However, much like similar news regarding Stalker 2, it sounds this is more of a run-up-to-launch optimisation thing more than any specific issue with Xbox Series S. Funcom seems very confident that the game will run well across lots of different hardware spec, with Unreal Engine helping out in that regard.

“Unreal does a lot of the work for us in some ways. What we’re more doing is optimisation of assets, and using various technologies, be it FSR or something else, to replicate frames.

But it will still perform well on hardware that’s years and years old. We’ll be able to do it!”

As we mentioned up at the top, Dune: Awakening doesn’t have a specific release date just yet, but you can expect it to hit Xbox Series X|S shortly after its early 2025 PC launch – and hopefully running well on Microsoft’s two current-gen consoles.
