THE war between zama zamas is reportedly continuing in Soweto.

This after four people have been killed following a shooting incident at Braamfischerville, Soweto, near Durban Deep, which is slowly becoming a hotspot for illegal mining.

Illegal miners frequently help themselves by digging up at the old, unused Durban Deep mine. The bodies were found lying face down.

Speaking to Daily Sun, residents who live near the shooting incident said they heard gunshots on Monday night, 2 September.

On Tuesday morning, 3 September, residents woke up to four bodies of suspected illegal miners lying in an open veld.

The gunshots are nothing new to residents, as they have become a daily occurrence.

Residents told Daily Sun they feared for their lives.

“The zama zamas in our community live among us. We’ve alerted the police. We are, however, shocked that nothing has been done. These people operate without fear. They even operate in daylight,” a resident said.

The police’s weekly operations, such as Shanela, targeting criminal activities, have failed to deter the brazen zama zamas who sometimes operate openly.

Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that cops have opened a case of four counts of murder after four bodies were discovered in an open veld in Braamfischerville in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“The victims who are suspected to be illegal miners were found with gunshot wounds. The motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage, although it’s suspected to be related to a fight between illegal miners,” Masondo said.
