How Often Do You Upgrade to a New Phone?

I am still on my parent’s phone plan and will likely hang on as long as I can. However, the family plan I’m on doesn’t include regular smartphone upgrades. Because of this, the only way I can ever get a new phone is to buy an unlocked model; which is an expensive purchase to make. I only recently upgraded to the Google Pixel 8 when it was on sale earlier this year, and it is my first new phone since the Samsung Galaxy S10 I bought all the way back in 2019.

The main reason I finally decided to upgrade after five years was because my old phone was finally starting to slow down enough that I could no longer justify holding off. With new phones coming out literally every year, I find myself wondering how many people are like me, and how many people are upgrading far more often. More specifically, I can’t help but wonder if how often you upgrade is tied to the OS you prefer to use. With the new iPhone 16 models coming out this month, I’d like to ask for some answers in the poll and comments below.

Now more specifically, I’d like to get a sense of a breakdown of iPhone vs. Android users out there. I have personally never been a part of any of the iPhone generations, but I’ve flipped between various different Android phone brands throughout the years. Meanwhile, my wife’s entire family is exclusively using iOS devices. Below I’ve included a poll we have running across various different articles across the site.
