THOUSANDS of Zulu virgins attended Umkhosi Womhlanga (Reed Dance Festival) to present their reeds to King Misuzulu as a symbol of triumph over temptation and a steadfast choice to preserve their virginity.

The Zulu nation cultural event, which was celebrating 40 years since it was revived by King Misuzulu’s parents, King Zwelithini and Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, was held at Enyokeni Royal Palace on Saturday, 14 September in Nongoma, KZN.

Before the girls take the reeds to present to the king, they undergo virginity testing. When they are confirmed to be virgins, they receive a white dot on their forehead.

Zulu royal princess, Zelamile Zulu, led thousands of virgins to present their reeds to King Misuzulu.

Top musicians Qwabe Twins, also known as Q Twins, who have attended the event many times in the past, also attended the festival as virgins and presented their reeds to King Misuzulu.

They told Daily Sun they attended Umkhosi Womhlanga to celebrate their virginity and their Zulu culture.

Virginia Qwabe told Daily Sun that presenting their reeds to the king was a way to praise their king and assure him that there are still virgins like other thousands of Zulu virgins.

Viggy Qwabe said presenting their reed to King Misuzulu was a way to show that they are still practising their culture.

“Umkhosi Womhlanga helps by letting us know our culture because we are people who want to learn more. Learning about Umkhosi Womhlanga, we have realised that many young women are surviving with it and we are also surviving through it,” she said.

“As Umkhosi Womhlanga is celebrating 40 years, we are happy that it has helped many young women. If it were not for this event, some of the young women wouldn’t have reached the level they are at. We are thankful for this event, and we are saying happy 40 years to Umkhosi Womhlanga,” she said.

King Misuzulu encouraged the virgins to keep their virginity and told them that they will not run out of men.

“You are future mothers, and we wish to see you succeed so that the nation will go forward. Just take care of yourself, don’t rush for men, you will not run out of men. You were born when men existed, and you will die leaving men here. Don’t rush. By luck, men don’t get too old,” he said.
